MG MGF Technical - Wet Carpet in Passenger Side

My 96 (R) MGF has developed wet carpet in the passenger side footwell, anyone know where its coming from ?

Thanks
P Jones 1

Well Mr Jones

If it's a '96 it aint a R is it?

early F's had door seals which didnt include a notch about 1 cm long about below where the speaker is in the door.

This is a cunning development which means that if water does leak in through the join between the hood and the door glass, the water will dribble down the door and onto the seal between the door and the sill, and then through the notch and out of the car. Early seals ..about 1996 didnt have this notch so the water would turn the other way and end up in the footwell.

I had my seals updated to the later 1997 onwards spec and touch wood I've had no problems since, in fact I can say that the F is the first convertible I have owned that is actually waterproof...and I've had many!

Most likely from the heater box seal - a notorious water ingress spot on the MGF. More here: http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/water_leaks/wet_passenger_side_carpet.htm

I agree Neil - the window seals are another potential cause of soggy carpets. Still a problem on my car! Grrr!

Of Cause Rob could be right too!

Yeah Rob! you might still have the early seals on yur car, there's a gap in mine as described above, does the trick...you could cut a litle notch if you like!

I wasnt very bothered about keeping the originality of the car that pure as MGR managed to fit driver's side carpets left and right, so I have heel pads in both footwells.
So when the car went to the special projects team at Longbridge for a variety of tweaks in 1997 (including the lovely engine it has ;¬) ) and they replaced the carpets, they replaced them with....you guessed it two drivers' side carpets one each side!!! So I guess it's unique in that respect!

read them through thoroughly and go to work on your pride and joy, do what i did too the heater box inlet under the near side wiper (block it off and cut a hole in the box itself under the bonnet. since doing this 16 months ago my footwell is bone dry

Have you checked to make sure that there isn't a tinygap between the top front corner of the door glass and the rubber seal. Even a tiny gap will allow water to run down or drip in. If there is a gap - then it is likely that the window stop in the door is broken - or misaligned and needs to be replaced.
Also - IF there is a gap - make sure that you drop the window a little after geting in or out of the car and then carefully put the window up again to make a good seal.Even if you do this and then open the door again the gap will return. The same can happen on the driver's side and cause wet carpet and/or seat.

I know - mine leaks if I don't go through this ritual and it is only because I have been too lazy to fix the window stop.
