MG MGF Technical - What is this click??

It's not often I have the CD player off, but when I do, I've noticed a curious click sound, like a relay tripping, from behind the dash. It occurs at lowish speed when the throttle pedal is pressed and again when the pedal is released (still at lowish speed). It could be happening at faster speeds, but the ambient noise level is that much higher!!!

I assume this is something to do with the EPAS system?????????

From the description, it sounds similar to the noises that Bob was getting from his EPAS after a prolonged spell of being laid up...?

Ahhhhhh....except mine is used every day!!!!

Rob...how long ago was that thread???
SimonKE

Simon, about a month ago I think?
Rob Bell

Yeah...got it!!

My click only happens once each time, tho', and I haven't seen the warning light on other than when starting up.

Also, it may be my imagination, but I THINK the throttle-on click only occurs with a fairly "robust" pressing of the throttle pedal...I thought at first it was something rolling about in the central cubby hole.

Maybe it's nothing to worry about....other than the click, there are no other symptoms!!
SimonKE

Is it a ticking/clicking sound?

There is a previous thread covers this in the archive.., its to do with the crossmember under the dash..

£2000 at Rover, or two exhaust clamps at home (£2.32 from Halfords) fix the problem.

Simon,

OK, testing my memory now. But a couple of years ago i had to replace my throttle cable and to do this i had to remove the throttle pedal assembly from the foot well. It is possible that the cable, or the mechanism in the footwell is catching on something (carpet, loose wire etc), or maybe one of the securing nuts is loose and the assembly is moving on the thread when pressed firmly.

Just an idea.

It definitely sounds like a relay closing (& opening??) and it happens a half second or so after throttle opening and closing, and (I'm sure) only at town speeds (30/40mph)

S*d's law, of course, I couldn't hear it on the run home last night!! And this morning I HAD to listen to Covenant!!!

I was hoping one of you would come up with something along the lines of..."oh THAT's just the "qqrr??" relay triggering...TADT...nothing to worry about"

I'll check out all yr suggestions, but, in the meantime, I'll adopt the number one noise curing stategy......turn up the stereo!!

;-D
SimonKE

Not sure how Bob cured his clicking relays Simon. I think it just went away? Or maybe another case of turning up the stereo! LOL

One thing that might be worth a look at are the EPAS ECU connections - perhaps a dodgy connection is causing an intermittent fault with the EPAS relays????
