MG MGF Technical - What Shocks??

Guys

Im am wanting to upgrade my shock absorbers but im not sure what to go for.

I think its a toss up between the avo adjustable ones or the trophy standard shocks. Both of these with polyflex bushes in.

Which one would be best??? / best price etc to get them??

I dont really do track stuff. All i want to do is tighten up the suspension more than my 60k shocks do!!.

I believe the install is a simple job as well! Just need loads of release spray!!.

Give Techspeed a call about their Bilsteins, they are supposed to be a lot better than the standars shocks.

As far as I know they are made to Techspeed's own spec.

Another vote for Techspeed's Bilstein dampers!

Regarding Trophy dampers - yes they are fractionally stiffer (on rebound) than standard MGF dampers, they still aren't all that great.

A decent aftermarket shock will ALWAYS be better than any MGF standard shocker.

In the world of shock absorbers, you get what you pay for.

Avos are adjustable - and readily available (MG World featured these in their MGF chassis tuning article). Just be a little careful with adjustables: remember that the standard shock absorber mountings are designed for dampers that have little resistance on compression - and therefore are underengineered for stiffer dampers. The rear upper mounting point is a favourite place to crack - but happily Mike Satur et al do retail strengthening plates that can be welded in to repair potential damage...

Would it be recommended then to have these plates welded on??? I doubt if id want to over crank the shocks!

So there is a difference between Billies from Mike and those from Techspeed ?

>>> Would it be recommended then to have these plates welded on??? <<<
Hard to say no, but it isn't required at all.

Depends ... I've had AVOs on my '96 *F* for about 2 yrs now with no problems ... you just need to be careful about how hard you adjust them.

Erik,

The TechSpeed Bilsteins are unique to them - manufactured to their own settings and with a difference between the front and rear setups.

I believe that Bilsteins 'over the counter' for the MGF are the same front and rear.

I agree with Gaz and Erik - no need to install the strengthening plates unless your car suffers from problems - as many cars don't. It's a problem to be aware of Chris.

If you do go down the AVO route and I believe the AVOs are pretty much at the low end of the shocks upgrade ladder then try AVO themselves. I found them cheaper by going direct.
