MG MGF Technical - Whats this all about then?

Sorry for my ignorance, but while fitting my Trophy TB (Which has made a significant improvement in acceleration!!) I thought I'd take the plastic cover off of my engine (to spray the leads with WD-40), where I expected to find 4 HT leads leading to 4 Spark plugs.

To my astonishment all I found were 2 Silicone HT leads each of about 6" long comming out of 2 plastic blocks, which each had low voltage wires going into them.

So whats going on?

My car is an X-Plate 2000MY Steptronic

Mad!

Don't know if this is a Steptronic thing or a general update to MY 2000 cars, but my Feb '96 has exactly what you would expect, 4 HT leads leading to 4 sparks in 4 cylinders.

Where do the two HT leads go to? Back to the coils below at the back?

MPI MEMS 1.9 - Used a more traditional distributor and HT lead configuration.

VVC MEMS 2J - Ignition coils mounted low on the engine below the inlet manifold. Incidentally, the length of these leads and position of the coils also being a factor in damp-start problems that have been reported on the BBS at various times.

MPI/VVC MEMS 3 - Coils mounted under the plastic cover as you found using short HT leads to the spark plugs. i.e. as it should be. ;-)

Yep :-) this is MEMS3 as Paul says, which was introduced with 2000MY MGF and all 25/45 models.

It's not without its problems I might add....

HT Leads (GHT291) on this setup give problems, we have replaced 26 sets since 01/01/00, looking at our DMS system...

Misfires and failure to start are the favourites

Thanks chaps, bit worrying about the failure rate though....just as well I sprayed the leads with WD-40, in 6 months or so I think I'll replace the leads as a matter of course. Does Mike Satur/B&G do higher performance replacement leads like these.

One other thing though....how come only two leads?? what about the other 2 Spark plugs, do the plastic blocks mount directly onto them? how hard is it to change the Sparks on one of these?

Cheers,
Nigel

Double-ended ignition coils, one directly onto the spark plug, the other with an HT Lead. Repeated again for cylinders 3&4
