MG MGF Technical - Wheel Bearings?
Hi guys, think that my handling problem could be the wheel bearings, what do you think. How would I know if the wheel bearings had gone? Regards, Mike Gibson |

Definately worth getting checked out,MG. |

One way would be to jack up each wheel and see how well they rotate and also wobble the wheel to see if there is any movement. Tom |

Tom, I did that last weekend at my friends garage, but no movement. Just don't know what this handling problem could be, I suppose it could still be bushes. Weird to explain whats happening, it's like driving in heavy winds, juddering sort of feeling and not much traction. Regards, Mike Gibson |

Have you had chance to get a look at the bushes. I am guessing the inboard side of the amrs are quite difficult to access, but if you can get the car up on axle stands you might be able to see. Another thought might be the bolts from the subframe into the body. Again should be able to check with the vehicle on stands! Good luck! |

Rich, are there any photo's of these on the web?? Regards, Mike G |

Don't rule out the wheel bearings yet Mike - might be worth getting your preferred garage to have a look. These MGF bearing failures seem to be quite difficult to diagnose - not least because they don't make the characteristic rumbling noise on cornering. |

I recall any older thread from good old Roger P. Search for GHK 1366 or GHK1366 should give results from the archives. D |

>>it's like driving in heavy winds<< Thinking about it, I had something slightly similar to this feeling (apparent lack of directional stability) which was associated with a suspension squeak. It turned out to be loose rear lower wishbone bolts... Something else to have checked out Mike. |

Mike, my rear left wheel bearing became worn last year - it was like driving in heavy crosswind above ~80 km/h. A new GHK1366 was required as Dieter mentioned. However: Diagnosis of that failing wheel bearing is very difficult! It's not enough to shake the suspicious tyre a litte to check if the bearing is worn, because even a very small play in bearing results in a major impact on the driving stability of the car! In my case it was necessary to jack up the tyre and shake it with full power with both hands (okay, okay, I'm from Austria, but I'm not Schwarzenegger) in both vertical and horizontal alignment. Even though it was hardly possible to feel if there's a play. But the car was undrivable at speeds above ~80 km/h. Markus |
