MG MGF Technical - wheel bearings
hi everyone, has anyone tackled a wheel bearing on their mgf? how difficult are they to do? thanks, matt... |

The only difficult bit is that you need hydraulic press. Strip it down yourself and then visit your local friendly garage and get him to take out the old bearing and press the new one in place. |

thanks dave. wish haynes did a manual for this car.....! |

Let me guess.... near side rear? Its with checking the condition of the flange whilst you're there, as these are also prone to failure. |

Haynes do not do a manual but you can buy one for the MGF. You can ontain one from the MGF Register or other good book sellers http://www.mgfregister.org/shop/29-mgf-workshop-manual.html |

A copy of the MGF workshop manual is worth its weight in gold. |

It is worth noting that the MGF is simply 2 Metro front subframes one with an engine in (At the rear) and one at the front with the engine removed. With thatin mind a copy of the Metro manual will cover much of the MGF. The wheel bearings are not too difficult once the hub has been removed (top and bottom knuckles removed, (easier if the suspension is depressurized) With that removed the Wheel bearing is easy to knock out with a hammer and punch. The new one can be knocked in in the same manner. Only attempt this if you are competent in mechanical techniques |

thanks all, think i will get the manual suggested. Front o/s was advised on mot, but might be worth doing all 4 i guess, done 76k. |

I would be very careful before I fitted new wheel bearings. Whist the bearings do fail occasionally it is very often mistaken for play in either the top or bottom knuckle joints. Do the test yourself and prove which is faulty first. Even a track rod end can be wrongly disgnosed as wheel bearing and I had to change a couple of those on my MGF at MOT this year on a car that has only done 33000 miles. |

Just ordered the 500 page official mg manual from ebay... |

While Bob may be very skilled with a hammer & drift technique, David's advice (hydraulic press) is by far the safer option. It's an interference fit, requiring several tons of pressure equally spread around the circumference to slide the bearing out of the hub, and that's damned difficult to achieve that with anything other than a hydraulic press, and a socket/disc/drift of exactly the right size. Take your hub & new bearing and a brown beer token to a friendly local workshop ;o) From memory (rarely reliable) the workshop manual instructs the removal of the brake disc; chances are the disc won't want to let go of the drive flange without considerable persuasion, and it doesn't impede the bearing swap, so leave it on and save yourself a lot of swearing. |
