MG MGF Technical - Wheel Noise

Guys, got bit of an issue and need some help:
When the car is in motion I hear, and I think it is coming from the rear drivers' wheel, a continuous squeak as I'm driving along. I can't hear the noise with the window up, but as summer is fast approaching I don't want the open top motoring to be spoilt by squeaks, Any ideas? Something like a wheel bearing gone perhaps? Your help is much appreciated!
Thanks
Paul

Paul, have you checked the condition of the brake pads?
Rob Bell

Rob

Are you suspecting the MGR/Rover audible worn brake pad warning spring?
JohnP

Either that or the pad has worn down to the metal base plate.
Rob Bell

Haven't checked the pads, but if it had worn down to the metal, would it make a noise even when i wasn't braking?
Paul Lucas

The pads should self servo off the disks when not braking so hopefully no noise. The rear pads have a strip of spring steel attached; when pads get low, and brakes are applied, the strip just touches the edge of the disk and makes a squealing noise. Never had it actually happen on my car but daughters R400 did it and had her quite worried.

Cheers JohnP, i'll have a look tomorrow. Rob thanks aswell.

Funnily enough (not!) if you have metal on metal contact, you get a soft swish or squeal noise reflected from road side objects - even if you've not got the pad warning spring.

Unfortunately, I know this to my own expense when the inner rear pads on my car wore down to a wedge following a track day at Donington (which I didn't pick up on), and the noise started whilst in Germany on the way to the Nurburgring! Argh!

Well, I've had a look at the back brakes, and there seems to be loads of pad left. When I'm driving it, the noise is there, continuous squeaking, however when I brake the noise stops! Any ideas now? It does seems to be coming from the rear drivers side, but I could be wrong. It was in an accident a while back, when most of the impact was on the driver's front wheel. The rear wheel hit the kerb, but ever so slightly..... It had some spraying done the other day, and I was told that one of the track rod ends needs replacing soon. Could this be related? Thanks in advance...

Hmm -- squeaking. I presume that the dampers are okay and not leaking? Squeaking from the rear suspension can eminate from the upper damper mounts. Fairly rare for these to cause problems with standard dampers, but not unheard of. Have a look at them - hopefully they'll look nothing like Andrew's did! - http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/common_problems/CoH/suspension_failure.htm
