MG MGF Technical - wheel nuts
bought my f a short while ago and just had it to dealers for something done.they told me that the tyres were the wrong way round.i have got 185's on back and 205's on front and they should be the other way round(so they say).anyway today i thought i would swop them round.got one side done then got front wheel off and then came to the rear wheel and can't get the bloody stud out.they have these silly covers on them.my standard wheel brace is a little too big and rounds them off.one did come off then the one underneath is too small.can anyone shed some light on this please.

Scott, Congratulations with your F. Just in time for the topless season! About the weel nuts. There are lots and lots of friends on this board that will help you, but I notice a slight decrease in willingness to answer questions that have been put up time and time again. However, there is a wealth of knowledge (accumulated in six years of experience) on the threads in the Archive. Stay in "MGF Technical", click on "Archive", type "wheel nuts", tick "this phrase" and click on "Start Search". If any of the postings over there doesn't answer your question, then please come back. Happy motoring! Peter

Scott, you need a 19mm socket, if you ensure it's hex not bi-hex then it's virtually impossible to round off the nut. If one is bu-----d then treat yourself to new ones from Rover.

"they told me that the tyres were the wrong way round.i have got 185's on back and 205's on front and they should be the other way round(so they say)" If they really said that keep well away from the place - it's 185's front, 205's rear. If you have reversed them change them back - fast. What you need to check is if the tyres are 'directional' ie have they markings that indicate direction of rotation. If so ensure they are correctly fitted. It's possible they are directional but have got swapped side to side. good luck jt

Hi Scott, Had similar problem with wheel nuts recently, if the chrome cap comes off you will need a 18 mm socket to get the nut underneath off. Personally I purchased a set of solid chrome finished wheel nuts and new locking wheel nuts for just over £40 and replaced the whole lot, I stayed away from the OEM Rover ones, they are just too temperamental and the plastic puller for the locking nut covers is too fragile. The garage is correct, your wheels are on the wrong way round, should be 185 on front, 205 on rear. HTH regards Chris

Scott, Just to confirm, the bigger tyres should be to the rear (so reading your post, you need to change them). Even better, change the 185/55's to 195/50's when you put them on the front. Sounds like some numpty swapped them round to save tyre wear. Also check the type and tread depth of the tyres. Standard MGF tyres are Goodyear NTC3's. Whilst these are passable in the dry and twitchy in the wet, they are a lot better than some other types of tyres are on the MGF (which can be very sensitive to certain tyre compounds). Also check the tread depth on them too, as it's better to have more grip on the back than on the front (generally, but even more so in a rear-wheel drive car). Leigh
