MG MGF Technical - wheels colour
Having just spoken to the local Rover dealer and once again be proved they know nothing about cars I am wondering if anybody knows the part no or paint description or has found a suitable paint for spraying wheels with that actually matches the others unlike the 'silver' paint from Halfords? Mr Helpfull parts man tried explaining that wheels aren't painted....hmmmm Anyway help! |

Your parts man is correct, alloy wheels are not painted - just polished. If you wanted to make your wheels the same colour as your bodywork, they would need to be stove enabled. I'm not even sure if this can be done in such a way so as to perfectly match your car's colour. Sam |

I think they are laquered BUT people like Frost do wheel paints have a look at their web site www.frost.co.uk Ted |

Actually, I was rather under the impression that alloy wheels WERE painted...??? |

most alloy's are powder coated, they can be done in any color you like & they cost about £30 per wheel........ |

My alloys were Orange now they are Silver, powder coated for £25 a wheel. |

Chris, how much were the wheels? Do they fit a standard 'F'? Cheers. |

It is of course silly marketing speak to call the wheels "alloy" as it begs the question "an alloy of what?" They are mostly (98%?) aluminium and if they were not coated with something our nicely salted roads would destroy them in a very short time! Cheers Patrick |

As our MGf has after market wheels, I not sure if the originals were painted. However I do know our '97 Rover 400 wheels are painted (and they are original). I had to get one resprayed recently as a tyre bay mechanic forgot to tighten the balance machine’s wheel retainer and spun the paint off. It wasn't powder coated. |

My wheels are powder coated Brake Powder coated most of the time !!! Mintex grey I think its called STU |

Have a look at the inside of the wheels.... Have a look where silver meets white, that's the prove that the silver look doesn't come from the Aluminium. |

hey, what a silly thread ! Wheels are painted for sure!!!! unless you have them polished or chromed... |

Ally wheels are painted and laquered. Its a fairly simple job to refurbish them. Anybody who wants to know how to do it get in touch. Mike |

Leigh, sorry to have took so long to reply, the wheels do fit standard Fs, take a look at the pics on the general thread titled "Update on TF conversion" then drop me an email and I will give you all the details. Dont want to advertise too much on this BBS because the same thing that happened to the Alloy heater switches may occur and we will all lose out again. regards Chris |

ok so whether they are painted or not isn't helping, I was wondering if anybody knew of a spray paint I can purchase that is the same as the original colour as Rover were rather unhelpfull! Cheers |

I found 'BMW Titan Silver' is a reasonable match for very small repairs, but not sure about spraying a whole wheel though..... |

> same thing that happened to the Alloy heater switches may occur ? ???? Is this along the lines of the smoked indicator sets? Did see the original thread on the subject that you posted, so will trawl the archives! Leigh |

Leigh, If you need any info just email me and I will willingly supply you with the answers to your questions, free of charge, honest. Chris |

Richard Just a little tip:- When you ask a question on an open forum you are bound to get many different answers - you take the ones you want, it is then common courtesy to say thanks but it certainly isn't courteous to tell people they are being unhelpful, if you ask another question people will remember you response and stay quiet.
