MG MGF Technical - Where does it go

A while back now I improved the distance that the alarm blipper worked by un-coiling the ariel, Now a friend has asked me to do the same on her 8mth old F, but the yellow wire that I want to un-coil appears to go back into the loom, unlike mine which was just coiled up and taped.

Is there a difference on later models?
Darren

Nope, it seems to go back into the loom, but they were just saving on tape, give it a tug and it will come free.

Where is this wire?

I'd like to extend my blipper range as well!
Nigel Kidd

Nigel,

Like you I've got a 2001 Steptronic. I tried to extend the wire some time ago but couldn't find it. I just assumed that this problem had be sorted on the MY2000 cars - I don't find the blipper range a problem.

Darren,

Nigel,

I've cut and pasted this from previous thread I started a few weeks back.......

All you need is a philips head screwdriver, and some scotch tape.

In the passenger footwell, there is a triangular panel. Inset into this is the interior footwell light. Undo two screws to take off the panel. One is fairly visible one at the top, one is not so visible at the bottom.

After taking off the triangular panel, you'll see a yellow wire. This is the aerial for the alarm blipper. One end of the yellow wire isn't connected to anything, and the free end is covered over with black tape (be sure to leave this black tape on - I guess its there to prevent contact with any metal or other wires). The free end is taped down to the wiring loom near the bottom of the centre column. On some models the yellow wire disappears into the wiring loom. Just give it a tug, and it should come free.

Once it's been freed, raise the yellow wire as high as you can, and use the scotch tape to fix it to something appropriate. Re-attach the triangular panel, and jobs a good 'un. You're blipper range should now be significantly increased.

Having read the above instructions and advise, i decided that even by my standards this seemed quite simple so in todays lunch hour i took of the triangular panel as per above but most of the wires coming out of the black box (presumably the lume)are threaded through that black plastic cable tidy stuff, thus impeding my progress. even so i managed to find what i thought was the yellow wire and gave it a good tug. Furtunately i didnt tug hard enough because it was actually coloured both yellow and red. Anyway managed to locate the yellow wire but couldnt get to the other end f it because it dissapears into the black plastic tidy thingy. Gave up as my chips were getting cold, may try again later.

N,

The link below has 3 pictures at the bottom of the page which might help. If you've found the yellow lead now then it should come free with some gentle persuasion. Then just a case of straightening it out and taping it up. If the free end of the yellow wire isn't taped up then it's probably worth covering the end with some tape.

thanks for that jim i think i will have another go this lunchtime. in the three pictures in the link the third is of the black thingymabob that the yellow wire comes out of and it seems to have been unplugged, Is this the easiest way of doing it and am i going to knacker anything if i pull the whole thing out then put it back when i am finished??

Thanks

Nick,

Nope leave the 'thingymabob'(Alarm ECU multiplug) where it is. Trace the yellow wire from the multiplug, and see where it disappears into the black wiring loom. Then just give it a tug and the free end should come out of the wiring loom.

There's a link to another website below. Once in, click on MGF FAQ, then alarm range. This will give you further instructions and some good pictures.

Of course it helps if I attach the link ;o)

well after going to lunch super confident about bieng able to perform this simple task once again i have FAILED. locating the wire was a doddle as i pretty much found it yesterday but it had been fed through a channel of plastic cable tidy. i took my stanley knife to the cable tidy and managed to get a better grip on the now partially exposed wire, unfortunately whoever tidied up the cable in the first instance must have ran out of that nice neat plastic stuff and so decided to use rolls and rolls of electic tape instead.

so in the end i gave up again. might try again when i have more time and patience!

I attempted to do the same today.

The wiring loom goes up the driver's side in my Jan 2000 car.

I pulled as hard as I dared, but it only came out a few millimeters (oh er missus!)

I am going to have to open up the plastic trunking and remove the black insulating tape to remove the yellow wire from the loom.

Just goes to prove that there is no such thing as a 5 minute job!

For some reason, on this 8mth old F the yellow wire that we are all on about goes back into the loom and all the way up above the steering column, as i found out when i tried to 'give it a tug', unlike mine (98 F), which was easily located, un-ravelled and straightened,

any ideas
cheers
Darren
