MG MGF Technical - Where is the Starter Motor?

I have read the wet start troubleshooting guide on this site, as my MGF is not starting. It suggested checking the connections on the starter motor (as the engine will not turn over despite the click), but I cannot find a diagram of the engine components to locate the starter motor - can anyone point me to a site with a diagram?

Thanks.

Can't point you to a site but can point you to the starter motor.

Open boot lid. Remove grille from above the engine aperture. Look down on left hand side towards the bottom of the engine. Starter motor is cylindrical with starter solenoid attached. Starter solenoid is also cylindrical and has the two wires attached. One very thick and the other thin.

Noel,

Had exactly the same problem myself recently. Symptoms were ingition not even turning over with the key. As per Bruce's instructions, locate the solenoid. Of the two attached wires, gentle 'wiggle' (I think that's the official technical term) the lower wire. At this point you may feel some dust falling away from the connection. This is corrosion which is preventing the electrical current from the ignition reaching the starter motor.

Mine started first time after this.

Jim,

Great tip. Will have to try that.

Tim,

Defintely worth a try if the ignition won't even turn over with the key. Takes 2 minutes, and you don't even have to access the engine bay. Just remove the grill in the boot as Bruce describes and access that way. Even if it's not the problem, it's worth a go to discount this cause before you go down the route of more time consuming investigations.

Good point Jim

Many years ago I did a stint working for Hoover and we were always taught to check the obvious first like:- 'The Cleaner isn't working' has the housewife remembered to put a shilling in the meter!

Never actually came across that being the reason but on several occasions it was just a fuse.
