MG MGF Technical - Wind Deflector

Hi Guys, I've just popped over from the Elan forum to try to pick your brains. My girlfriends mom has a MGF, which is a special edition 'Abingdon'?? - i think but not totally sure on that. Anyway for a up-coming birthday we thought we'd buy her a wind deflector, and wondered if anyone could recommend one, and secondly where to purchase said item from. Being a Lotus owner i fully appreciate that sometimes the factory items are not as good as aftermarket ones..
Thanks in advance for your help, and apologise if this topic has been 'done' before.

Paul,

You'll see one or two pictures here

MG one requires you to drill holes in your trim (T-Bar) and is most expensive. Newton Commercial one looks exactly like it and doesn't require you to drill any holes. Both of these are mesh windstops. Mike Satur does a clear toughened glass one. In my opinion it is the best looking one. It can literally be fitted in five minutes, doen't involve any drilling and I think that it's the cheapest.

Lot of debate as to which kind is the most efficient. However, I used to have a N & C one and now have a MS one and to be honest I think they all work well. It all comes down to personal choice.

The mesh ones are the most effective at reducing back drafts into the car!

But they look like a pair of tights stretched over a frame...

I have a NC one, actually from Classic Additions, there is an issue with the back draft pushing the wind-stop forwards, and if the seat is not right back it is a problem, I have the seat right back, as I am tall, and it sits nicely against the seat. The other solution is to tighten the nuts right up, but this makes it much harder to just flip down when not in use.

My original mesh Rover 1996 one is now fitted to it's third F/TF.

It does the job just fine, but I must admit inital fitting is a bit of a pain.

Making the hole in soft t bar is not that difficult, I find it's most easilly done with a couple of sharp screwdrivers of differing diameter.

I lost the template long ago and now just prise off t bar to make sure windshield mounting blocks line up with threaded nut fixing below.

You have wingnuts to adjust tightness so never any problem of it getting blown down.

Avoid a very early 2nd hand one because after a few months Rover downsized the windshield so you could fold it down without hitting the rear screen.

As far as a mesh screen goes your potential mother-in-law should be well impressed, a windshield is one of the most worthwhile accessories imho.

It also provides an effective way of stopping being dazzled from lights of following cars.

Steve - apologies for lowering the tone of this topic - but I thought the windshield would help prevent your nuts tightening? :-)

I'm following this thread with interest - personally have my heart set on the chrome MS windstop, but interesting to see other opinions (even if they're wrong! ;-) )

Adrian,

>>personally have my heart set on the chrome MS windstop<<

Mike's windstops are made of toughened glass (they have a small black metal strip along the bottom). However, he does do chrome roll hoops that can be fitted with the windstop, but you should note that they are seperate items and can be fitted independent of each other.

Hi David, I did indeed mean the chrome hoops & windstop - was having a brain freeze! I knew what I meant - how come you didn't? lol

Will probably get the new alarm blipper (see other thread), service, chrome hoops & windstop all done together at MGF centre next time it needs servicing - March I think.

Cheers
