MG MGF Technical - Window alignment advice
Hi, I really hope someone can offer some advice in regards to getting my drivers side window aligned / sealing properly. I bought the car a couple of months ago not realising that the drivers window pinched against the hood when the door was shut. I paid a local MGF dealer to realign the window and door (costing a shade under £100) and it seemed 'ok'. (The seal seemed poor but it wasn't pinching the hood anymore) Today I shut the door to find it pinching against the hood again! The dealer isn't interested but before I make a fuss I would like to know what should actually be done. After some fiddling around I noticed that if I didn't allow the window to return to the point it cuts out, the glass fits perfectly in the frame. (About 1 - 2cms short of where it naturally cuts out from holding the window switch in the 'Up' position). I see on Ebay someone is selling replacement window stops for about £16 including postage. Can I ask advice on: - Is it the window / door alignment that is wrong or is it simply the glass is rising too high? - Will replacement window stops fix it? If so, is it an easy job to do (ie as a non-mechanic, can I do it?) - Is £16 a reasonable price for these or should I pick some up from a local dealer? Any advice appreciated! Many thanks, James |

James Window adjustment is a long running problem. Tony has notes on adjustment at http://www.apttony.co.uk/ Windo Stops are readily availble fom local dealers or by post from Brown & Gammons (who are in list of advetisers). I thought £16 look a bit high but haven't bought any for at least 2 years. The window stop has been modofied 2 or 3 times during it's life, make sure you get the latest type. |

Oh the joys of window adjustment. :o( No surprise that your dealer didn't get it right - to be perfectly honest it is very hard to do properly and get a good result at the end. Not sure how they manage such consistent results at the factory actually? Anyone know? There are a number of adjustment screws that can be loosened so that the window can be adjusted in any one of three dimensions - and frequently in two at the same time. It takes alot of time and patience. Will be starting my second attempt very shortly - just as soon as I replace the window seals... |

Thank you both for such quick responses! It seems this is a more common problem than I realised. I am still unsure whether it is an alignment problem or whether the window stops have failed/broken. It seems the window stops are now the first thing to check for this type of thing? JohnP - your link looks extremely useful to check if this is the case. If it gets too complicated its back to a dealer! Thanks again - you have both been very helpful. James |

James, I think most points have already been covered here. Definitely check the window stop first before touching any of the adjustment screws - if it's a broken stop, then if you're lucky the adjustment will still be right once it's replaced! £16 pounds seems high - I think I paid £5 plus £1 postage to Brown and Gammons for a single stop. Hope this helps, Mark |
