MG MGF Technical - Window Leak
Hi, Bought a lovely R reg MGf a month ago. its the first heavy rainstorm since then and guess what!! it leaks! it leaks right underneath the handle for the door mirrors and runs down the interior panel on to the speaker. i have looked and a website says this is fixable but noone really says how. do I have to replace all the door seals or is there an easier option. look forward to hearing soon rob. |

rob I'm not ignorng others but Rob Bells' site is a mine of information about the MGF, including a section on leaks http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/ and follow the DIY section. Also Tony at http://www.apttony.co.uk/ has help for adjusting windows and seals. I should mention Paul as well but he has recently changed his url and I haven't got round to bookmarking him (sorry Paul). Also, if you are new, are you aware of the MG80 festivities at Silverstone over the weekend of 23-25 this month? If not, have a look on the MGCC site for details at http://www.mgcars.org.uk/carclub/index.html . Also stay on late on the Saturday evening for Dave Morris's excellent BBQ in the camping area. Rob, I overcame leaks on both sides this way: Find where the mirror section of the door touches the door rubber on closure. Along this point, insert a piece of soft rubber strip about 10cm long into the door rubber strip. You will have to ease the door rubber away slightly to put the strip in the channel. A little Evostick will ensure it stays in place. Does this help. I have no digital camera to show what I mean. Chris |

Hi Rob, if I understand your problem correctly you may be able to rectify it by adjusting the “deflector” which is the triangular panel the door mirror fixes onto. I recently made every adjustment possible (cantrail seals, A post seals, wire tension, clip adjustment etc) in order to fix a persistent leak at the top corner where hood meets windscreen. But it was adjusting the deflector position which affects how the window is held in that did the trick. The deflector adjustment is accessed by removing the door panel and the speaker socket, you can then wind the bottom of the bar that attaches to the deflector in and out to affect how it presses against the window. By trial and error and some gentle persuasion I set mine up and touch wood it has not leaked since. I hope this helps, if you like I can probably e-mail you a more detailed instruction. If you’re new to the “F” I can recommend getting hold of a copy of the “Rave” CD that contains all the workshop manuals for the F and is an invaluable reference. Also keep a close eye on your water levels and the condition of your cooling system if you want to avoid HGF and in my case having to replace the engine, ouch! |

Hi, firstly thanks JohnP for the links, and Chris for the advice, I will take a look and see if that works. Russ, Could u possibly email me so I could chat some more to you. how can i get a hold of a copy of "rave"? regards Rob rturpin_2000@yahoo.com |

Rob, I myself supplied Russ with a copy of Rave ! i have 1 copy left and if you supply the post & package you can have it free . Robert |

Hi Rob & Rob! I’ve e-mailed you both separately regarding the threads. Is everyone going to Silverstone next week? Is one day better than the others as Saturday looks favourite to me at the moment. Regards, Russ. |

Russ, I am going to try and make it on the Saturday too, I unfortunatly am on a training course down in reading for the next 2 weeks, but i am going to try and get the saturday off to come. Rob Robert, I have emailed you seperatly about the CD. Thanks. |

I too have this problem on both sides (a paper tissue pushed into the gap stops it for a while), I have looked at various sites to try and find a way to fix it, but not being to mechanicly minded have never been able to get it sorted. One thing that puzzles me, on the drivers side the window "butts up" against the door seal when the door is closed, but on the passanger side the top edge of the window pushes up on to the seal. Which side is correct and is there a quick fix for the incorrect side ?? any advice appretiated. Cheers, Carl |

<on the drivers side the window "butts up" against the door seal when the door is closed>... Sounds like you have a broken window stop on the drivers side..easy fix, and plenty of instructions in the archives, or take it to local dealer for small(ish) charge! |
Blue Max |
Thanks Blue Max, but the windowstop's fine. I imagine then that the window isn't supposed to "but up" against, but close up into the seal. If this is the case is Russ's suggestion of adjusting the deflector the way to alter the angle at which the glass closes ? |

Carl, I can strongly recommend that everyone should try to obtain a copy of the "Rave" CD. There are multiple adjustments for the hood described and it took me until the last one that I cracked it. I think the hood on the F is a marvel, easy to put up and down from seated position even when moving. I can open and close my F ½ a dozen times before my sisters SLK’s motors have whirred into life, not so good when it leaks though! Good luck, Russ. |

Mine used to leak in this way. I finally fixed it by running a length of plastic tubing, 6-8 mm, 20cm long down inside the rubber seal when it gets squeezed by the door mirror. |

Russ, had the door cover off last night and tried several adjustments, tried moving the deflector inwards (at the top end) to get the glass to seal up into the rubber rather than against it. All to no avail, maybe the hood can be moved to the glass rather than the other way around but it seems to fit fine everywhere else. Any idea where I can get this "Rave CD" ?? Cheers, Carl |

Chris, Drop me an e-mail regarding the Rave CD. When I adjusted the deflector, I noted that it was possible to wind the lower bar mount in to adjust it’s lower position. With the window wound down I also carefully, but physically bent in the deflector in from the top to achieve what is now a leak free seal to the window. The cantrail seals can be pulled backwards and forwards to achieve a seal, you may need to remove the 8mm nut and bolt to allow movement if this has been fitted. I also wound the clip in slightly on the drivers side by releasing the spring clip and adjusting the nut / thread. There is also a tension wire that can be adjusted, the CD tells you how! Regards, Russ. |

I had this problem on our TF. It turned out that the window was going up too far and pushing on the rubber bit that is at the top of the triangular door mirror support. With the window right up, it should just touch this rubber seal. If it pushes it up then water will leak in. pete |
