MG MGF Technical - Windows stopped working

For a few weeks now when ever I use my electric windows they go down very slowly. Now they have completly stoped working on the drivers site and only move a bit on the passenger side. I have checked the fuses and they all seem ok. Any ideas what this could be, it seems like there is not enough power to operate the windows, could it be a bad realy?

Usually, problems with the windows is related to a failed fuse that is shared with the heated door mirrors - but this doesn't sound like this problem, so the finding that the fuses are all okay is not surprising.

It is unlikely to be two failed window lift motors.

Therefore, I would suspect that there is an electrical short somewhere, or a bad common earth.

I'd start looking for the former. There is a known weak point in the routing of the wiring harness behind the main dashboard supports behind the central console: the wires can chaff against a sharp metal edge and potentially short out.

How confident are you at DIY Mark? Scarlet Fever's web site (http://www.sfforever.co.uk ) has instructions on how to dismantle the dash board trim...

I have traced through the wires and can find no obvious problems, could the problem be with the window lift emu unit in the drivers foot well?
Mark Brunt

Easier to check out the earth and ecu connections first as they are common to both windows.
I'd just clean up the earth connection first. If that doesn't work I'd replug the ecu 2/3 times. Then take the door card off and check the volts arriving at the motor.
Wire shorts usually result in blown fuses.

Mark, the window lift ECU in the driver's foot well controls only the driver's window. So if the passenger window is also U/S this seems an unlikely candidate.
Rob Bell

Yep. I must be more explicit Rob, it's the earth that's common to both:-)

Were the windows slow going up as well as down?
kwaring

Yes, windows were slow going up and down. Drivers site has stopped completly and the passemger site more only a few mm's up and down.

Where would I check the earth connection?

Its a sunny day here, so plan to open the car up.

There's two I believe. Just forward of the drivers door and passenger door behind the carpet or just above it IIRC. Poke about you'll see them. Whitish nylon like connectors. Similar/same? as the ones under the bonnet. At least they are on the F. Sorry about the sunshine, it's dark here now.
