MG MGF Technical - Wiper arm

The ball and knuckle joint on the wiper arm came apart the other day on my F and I'm hunting for any info on replacing it. The part is on order and as far as I can see it bolts through the windscreen scuttle and is bolted to the wiper motor. My main question is, are the nuts that retain the spindles difficult to remove, they appear to be large flat nuts.

Many thanks.

John,

They“re not that difficult to remove, but they“re big. I think they“re over size 19. Jus be carefull removing the one near the driver“s side not to damage the paint work. The mechanism fits tightly under the hood. I had to disconnect the speedometer cable. Also make sure the mechanism is in "wipers down" mode, so it is completey retracted (I hope you understand what I mean), otherwise, it won“t come out. MGR only supplies the whole set motor+rack. Try some second hand brokers, they might sell the rack by itself. People like Bromgrove MG,

good luck,
David.

I managed to order just the rack/spindles without the motor, £63 +VAT. Watch the motor pack in a week after I fit the rack! Thanks for the info though. Skinned knuckles looks to be the order of the day.

John,

Where did you order them?
David.
David

The local MG dealers! Suprised, so was I. Kernahans in Witney.

John, did you get the pix that Tim asked me to forward to you?
Rob Bell

No Rob, nothing has come through yet.
Thanks in advance though.

Hopefully headed your way now...

Yep, got them. Many thanks Rob.

Your welcome. Not sure where the first set have gone... will doubtless appear out of the ether in due course ;o)

Oddly enough it sounds as though my brother's car has suffered something similar - driving along yesterday, switched from intermittent to continuous wipe, and one of the wipers stopped altogether and the other ground to a halt.

Luckily for him, his car is still covered by the warranty.

Let us know how you get on John :o)

JFK, have you got the part number to hands, please ?

Just for the records.

I'll look at the box this evening for the part number.
By the way, fairly easy to get the old wiper linkage off but on refit I had to work blind to get the wipers to settle back in the park position as the nut that secures the linkage to the motor is behid the mounting bracket and you can only do it in situ. Two of the blanking plugs that cover the philips screws on the rear edge of the plastic scuttle flew across the garage, never to be seen again.

Those covers are a nightmare - very easy to damage too. Fortunately they are cheap!

Job done then John?
Rob Bell

Yep, all done. The usual knuckle scars showing for my efforts. The way the plastic scuttle finisher fits on the two ends is a bit of a bodged design. Having deep 20mm recessed holes with very thin plastic moulded collars makes it akward to align the holes up and screw down the philips screws.
JFK

John, how did you get the two ends to fit tight to the frame. These ends tend to pup up on mine. Pressing them keeps“m there for a couple of days and then the ends come out again.
David.

Just read my last posting, I think I must have become dyslexic.
I couldn't locate the screws back to the original holes, so, being self tappers, I off set them slightly through the white plastic plugs. Where the trim meets the windscreen, it has moved down a bit but there is still a tight seal. I'll let you know if they pop out. If they do, a blob of Araldite will take care of that. Not a good design IMO.

>>>Having deep 20mm recessed holes with very thin plastic moulded collars makes it akward to align the holes up and screw down the philips screws
===the plastic hardens and then bits break off if you over-tighten. I ended up fitting a complete new plastic finisher plus the screw covers. Looks smart now...
