MG MGF Technical - wiper motor/replacement motor?

Hi all!

I've read in threads in the archive that people have had problems with their wind shield wiper electric motor and the irritating noise it (a faulty one) produces.

Now, this is the case with my motor and I've had it replaced about 18 months ago for the same reason. Just replacing it with another poor quality part seems very unsatisfactory. I'm informed it'll cost me about 240 Euro for the part alone.

Did anyone come to a solution on how to make the noise stop, without replacing it? What actually causes the noise?

Is there a replacement motor out there, that is of better quality or possibly cheaper? I'm thinking perhaps there might be a Honda electric wiper motor or so...

...and, is there a description on the Internet on how to replace it?

Full instructions for the removal of the wiper assembly can be found on the SOS site:

Begin by removing the shroud panel...

Then, here are the instructions for removing the wiper assembly...

These instructions include the removal of the scuttle finisher - this is not strictly necessary if you only want to remove the wiper assembly, but we did both jobs at the same time.

Hope this helps.

Hi Svante,

I bought a second hand unit at MGF centre (look at banner on top of this page). A nealy new item (for Ł 75), that performs upto my expectations. Did need to open it up to release the bit of water that youŽll find in any *F*wipermotor.
I managed to remove the motor without removing the whole rack! Fiddly (ing?) job

good luck

david

It's almost the gear box which get's noisy. Though, worth to try cleaning and grease the motor inside.
May be it helps.

When you dismantled the part with Andy's advise on site, the follow up to get inside cab be found here
http://www.mgfcar.de/wiper/index.htm

In my case cleaning, grease and the drain hole drill did not help. The Motor was OK, but the gearbox remained noisy.

The missing cheap looking large black inside bonnet plastic cover kills the motor if it rains.

Agree with Dieter. I managed to leave the black plastic cover off for 2 rainy weeks and the motor was dead!

Svante, as the others have said, it is ingress of water that causes the motor to fail. There is nothing wrong with the quality of the motor as long as it is kept dry !

Hi all!

Thanks for your tips. I have thought as Dieter that it is actually the gear box that's noisy rather than the actual motor.

I'd like to know what's causing it. "rain" you say. Dampness in the system somewhere.

I have my old wiper motor. I'll see if I can take the gear box apart and see if I get any Ideas.

I have never had a "plastic cover" as you describe. Isn't this just a RHD thing? Such a cover has been missing since I bought the car. The joke's on me then.

Still, wouldn't a "wiper unit", a technical invention designed to remove water, be able to work in damp conditions? This one doesn't. A poor design if you ask me.

lol :-)

I think the plastic cover Dieter is referring to is the shroud panel. All F's should have one, both right and left hand drive.

Hi!

It seems there's no way of taking the gear box apart without totally ruining it.

It is however easy to remove the magnetic casing surrounding the motor with everything still inside the bonnet. I did that and sandpapered the corrosion off that covered the inner wheel. After doing that, the motor seems to run more "assertively".

My guess is that the corrosion makes the motor produce less power to the wiper mechanics, and that the gear box wears down as a result of this.

The noise remains, but it's sunny outside now, so maybe I can live with it for a while until I'll have to buy a new motor.
