MG MGF Technical - Wipers packed up
Whilst driving today my windscreen wipers just stopped working, a fuse i thought but on checking fuse was sound. I removed plastic surround under bonnnet to gain access to motor, tapped the motor and wipers started working again. So I decided to remove the assembly, easy to unscrew all parts not so easy to get assembly out of the gap, managed eventually, removed motor cover to discover, cover and motor covered in rust. How water has got inside I don't know, but a quick clean with emery paper and a spray of WD40 on all moving parts, rteassembled and all is fine again. Has anyone else experienced siezure due to water ingress. I have some pics if anyone is interested. |

Chris, I'm sure that I've heard of this before. Check the archives. |

Yep, known ;) It happens always when the black plastic cover in the front bonnet is missing. http://www.mgfcar.de/wiper/dcp_3634_t.jpg http://www.mgfcar.de/wiper/index.htm I had the *option* doing the above doc (pic no.10 onwards) after a mad dealer here in DE forgot to re-mount it while the car stood for 2 weeks outside of their garage in the rain. Appreciate to getting more pics to mgf_at_mgcc.de btw, see for the right make year motor when you get a new one. The difference are the connectors. HTH Dieter |

Thanks Dave and Dieter. Dieter I will send you the pics, the cover on my car was in place so maybe it had been removed by a previous owner. Having looked at your instructions it is exactly the same, I cleaned it up and with abrasive paper and WD40 and it is working perfectly so hopefully it will last without having to purchase a new one. |

Yep, this has come up before. During the rebuild of Scarlet, Tim Woolcott gave me a hand and he mentioned it then. He not only knew about the problem, he had devised a way of removng the wiper assembly easily! Details (as ever) are on the SOS site. :-) SF |

I had the very same problem Chris and found that my windscreen wiper motor was half full of water. I covered the hole in the plastic scuttle finisher. This is the plastic which runs the full width of the car in front of the screen and is visible from outside the car. I.e the wiper drive spindles come through the plastic. Covered the hole with plastic using All Purpose Extr Strong Clear Adhesive and for good measure drilled a small hole in the bottom of the motor to let any water, which could get in, drain out. Three years ago and still going strong. Rain doesn't fall on the motor now. cheers Chris Bruce |
