MG MGF Technical - Wish Donk - Wish Donk
The VVC that i have recently bought has noisy windscreen wipers. They go wish donk wish donk etc with the donk happening when the wiper blades are at the bottom of the wipe (nearer engine) has anyone fixed this problem before - i will try and get under the plasic cover in the bonnet (did try one evening but one of the bolts doesnt unscrew and it got dark so gave up). the blades have recently been replaced as they needed to because of the MOT. it is coming from the left hand side as you look at the car (drivers side). |

If you can feel the donk as a thump when you have your feet on the pedals... there is a cable that needs moving away above the pedals... |

Yes i can - oh right. I shall have a look tonight and see what i can find. |

Are the wipers staying on the screen John? What kind of 'dong' noise are we talking about: something knocking against a metal panel? Not heard of this type of noise before being cause by a problem with the wiper linkages, but this is a possiblility... |

Its quite common, its usually sorted on the PDI... If you cant sort it post your email and I'll send you details of someone who can advise u |

I had a similar noise on my F - only the donk was at the top of the travel. It started after I replaced the blades with ones bought from Halfords. I think they were slightly longer and were hitting the windscreen frame on the offside. Another possibility, if you took the whole arm off to replace the blade, is that the arm has been put back onto the spindle in the wrong place. Ralph |

<<Its quite common, its usually sorted on the PDI...>> John's car has just had an MOT so is at least 3 years old. Does the problem come back with age - assuming it was originally sorted at PDI? |

I just spent ages typing this out and then IE crashed on me!!! I shall type it again... OK - i have taken the plastic cover off and found the problem the ARM that connects teh bottom of teh wipper blade to teh motor is catching on a bolt on the drivers side. when teh blades are down, and teh arm is at it lowest vertical and horizontal position it touches the head of a small screw/bolt. grease does not solve the problem. the bar needs to be lifted in some way so it is higher off teh actual car when the blades are down. other things noticed: teh blades are very low when in the off position, well below teh black on the windscreen, almost on teh bonnett. there is a load of rust, loads in fact, where water that runs off the windscreen collects. this is infront of teh wiper motor, quite a bit in front and does not actually effect the motor in anyway. i assume the rust appears when the engine is still, the rain falls, and collects as it runs off the windscreen. what should i do?? |
