MG MGF Technical - Wobbly ride

I was driving the other day on the motorway and nearly gave up and called out the AA.
It has never been that great, not as steady as the old Rover 200 or new Freelander but the rear seems to wave around like anything.
Up to 65 is not that bad but at 70 or over it impossible to hold a straight line.
Any ideas? I know that B&G and mot has mentioned that one of rear (something was becoming loose)

Any advice is welcome.

Worn ball joints TG, or has one of the rear dampers worked its way loose (can occur on early MGFs with worn bushes as they used smaller retaining washers...)

Other areas to check are tyres/ tyre pressures/ condition

Me again. I don't want to harp on about my recent work. However out of interest has anybody replaced the rear ball joints with the hub on the car. I ask, simply because to replace the front joints I took the hub off. Then proceeded with a 46mm deep socket, T bar, a fairly long piece of steel tube, a large vice and finally a hell of alot of force. These are loctited in well and truly and to be honest if I do the back I can see me pulling the car of the axle stands.

Simple things first: Have you recently had your rear tyres replaced? Are they to the correct pressure?

Stephen,

Have you seen the latest gallery on the SOS site (it's all there now, after some hassle with my dial up connection)?

Can't comment on the rear ball joints, but the front one was a complete pig of a job.

It's the same design at the rear, so the same *nice* job ;)

I have the same thing on a y reg Trophy 13,000 miles.
New tyres F1 G2 on the rear 3 months ago, tyre psi checked, tracking done twice, hight ok infact a hard ride.In a cross wind hang on ho ha and on a road with tarmac repair work thats been done hoo ha!.In fact better to keep to 60mph .The steering is so sharp you seem to twitch try to keep straight.I did think about putting an extra spliter below the spoiler incase its down force needed. Are can any one tell if the Trohpy had the same rack as the later TF?.
So thats me still trying to sort this 3 wheeler out.

Kev, sounds as though your tracking is way out - probably too much toe-out on the front and/or rear axle. Best get this checked ASAP before the tyres wear unevenly.

Regarding the steering track, the Trophy uses a standard MGF rack, not the faster (and much superior) TF item.

Sorry for the delay Scarlet. When you say the front was a pig are you refering to lower or upper balljoints. Lower will be awkard as we discused owing to the lowering of the sub frame. However in their wisdom Rover do say, unless I am reading the manual incorrectly, that the upper front and the rear may be removed in situ.

I like this idea for the rear as I don't fancy knocking back the drive shaft in order to remove the hub.
