MG TD TF 1500 - 10/43 embossing on Differential
The image below is from a 3rd-party 4.3 converted axle that a fellow enthusiast acquired. About a year ago I went his place to see the axle to confirm that it contained a set of 4.3 gears. He's been busy installing this past week. I recently asked him about the air vent fitting that Dave Clark provided with his conversions. While he was looking for the air vent hole he came across these numbers embossed upon the housing. They are just forward of the vent hole. Has anybody seen this before? Bud ![]() |

Bud. That is interesting. No embossed on mine, but it has other numbers on the tube and some others on the housing.

It isn't unheard of for people to stamp the gear ratio into the housing. Probably done by the shop who rebuilt it at some point. On MGA and MGB the pumpkin was stamped from the factory. |

Hi Bud. TD/TF diff's were marked with the ratio on the tube, at least all that I've rebuilt and changed the ratio on. I restamp the new ratio on the housing when I'm done. There are two stamps one is the ratio (8 over 39 in the image) the other is the serial number of the housing. The numbers started over after the second version of the housing started. See image. I think the interesting thing with Bud's is that the numbers are embossed VS. stamped in. |

They look stamped to me. If they're embossed then that would be a real mystery. |

Mea culpa, they are stamped. It's just that the chalk tended to pile up in the grooves. Talked to Dave Clark, this is not one of his. It just arrived in one of Dave's shipping boxes. Should be on the road in the next couple of days. Bud |
