MG TD TF 1500 - 123Tune Update

Here's my alternative to the smart phone idea of timing.

I can advance or retard with or without vacuum.
Dial in the middle is degrees of advance.
Lower left is RPM.
Upper right is Vacuum/Pressure in the manifold.
The others are coil amperage and temperature.

I can also create my own curve(s).
Also switch between curves while driving as conditions change.

It's all working. Now I just have to get used to tuning and using it.

The photo is my laptop with a USB into the distributor's electronic ignition.

Neat, Mort. How did you make the USB connection to the distributor?
Geoffrey M Baker

How do you mount that on the dash? :-)

I got the modified distributor from 123ignitions. It is the basic Lucas distributor with a opening for a Mini USB cable and a vacuum port. All of that connects to their circuitry.

Very cool! So this is just their software. Neat product, I'll have to check into it...

That's way cool. Wish I had it for my vintage racer. I've got the earlier non-programmable version of the 123 and it has been great.

Even the non-programmable one is easy to time-- you select your curve, make sure you have TDC, then static time it using a built-in LED. And you're done, unless you want to play with different curves.

For the originality folks, I'm sure that is a Lucas laptop, right? :)

Cant you see the oil stain under it?

It's clearly not a Lucas laptop. A Lucas laptop would be about six feet square, weigh two hundred pounds, and have a mechanical keyboard reused from 1960's typewriters. It would seldom work, but boy when it worked, you were impressed with it!

USB??? is that a new term for direct cable drive? :-)
