MG TD TF 1500 - 3rd and 4th gear selector shaft
Would someone be able to tell me the length of the 3rd and 4th selector shaft please/ Thank you |

I think from memory John there were two lengths. The later version included provision for a circlip. Which are you after? Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

The longer one thanks Peter |

I'll check my notes on the gearbox rebuild and get back to you, but as my box is an early one, I may not be able to help you. Barrie Jones would definitely know the answer. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Nothing in Barrie's notes. AKD834 only says that the change occurred at Engine No. 16482. Abingdon Spares only carries one called 'Shaft, Late TD-TF'. Moss gets quantitative and says 'SELECTOR SHAFT, 3rd & 4th, late type, 15" long". Bud |

Barrie Jones has advised me via John James that the early shaft measured 32.75mm in length and had no circlip groove. The later shaft was extended to add a circlip groove at the front and that you must not use a regular circlip because the ears will foul on the bell housing. It is important to use a wire circlip. |

Apologies I am to have the length clarified for I think it should read cm not mm. Apologies for this. |

Mr. Walton, I would contact either Moss, or Abingdon Spares, or both, and ask them to measure the length of the long selector shaft. Abingdon Spares: sales@abingdonspares.com (860) 322-3103 (800) 225-0251 Moss Motors: (805) 681-3400 (Intl) |

Thanks for your suggestion Bud. Abingdon couldn't help me at this stage as they had no stock however I have been advised by another that the length of the shaft is 32.75 cm (12.89"). |

Isn't that the dimension of the early shaft? I thought you need the dimension of the late shaft. Moss refers to it as being 15", ~38.1cm. Len Fanelli does gearbox rebuilding. Perhaps he might have one that can be measured, his email is laf48 (at)aol.com Bud |

Sent an email to Len Fanelli but as yet I haven't had a reply. Over the weekend I dismantled the gear box which had the short shaft installed. A friend had a spare used shaft which also was the early model. Both shafts had circlip grooves which I found a little unusual for the new 20" long shaft I thought was the only one to have a circlip groove. Thanks Bud for pointing out that Moss Motors had the length stated in their parts book as 20". |

John, I measure 383 mm for the longer one with a circlip and 335 mm for the shorter one with circlip. Cheers, Hugh |

Thanks Hugh. All good now with the installation of the longer shaft and with the gear box now in the car. Regards, John |
