MG TD TF 1500 - 40157D/E distributor wanted

I want to build up a back-up distributor. If anybody has a surplus 40157D or E distributor for my TF XPAG in any reasonable, rebuildable condition, please let me know.

According to the Lucas Parts Listing , the 40157D distributer is for a Wolseley -- Not MG TF?
Richard Cameron

Gordon,

Did you mean a TF 40367 D or E ? TFs originally had that designated Lucas Distributor or are you just changing the type for the spare rebuild for some reason?

I suppose if I were really savvy, I'd have the answer off the top of my head, but I checked my Lucas book, and that's what I came up with ... obviously not correct.

Where this is really going, is that I need to have my tired TF distributor rebuilt and I am going to send it to Advance Distributors for new bearings and to be curved for modern fuels; and they take a long time to do the job.

So I am really looking for a spare that I can use whilst I wait.

You're looking for a D2A4/40368.

Make absolutely sure that the alloy distributor body is not loose on the steel core first. To do this you need to grip the core in a vice and very firmly twist the body and see if it moves. If it does, don't bother to send it to Advanced. The same thing goes for buying another s/h distributor. I have read on here that it is possible to fix the problem yourself by pinning the body to the core, but I've not done it myself. I fitted a D45 from Advanced instead.

Rob, unless I'm mistaken they break down as...

40048: TC
40162: Late TC / early TD
40367: Late TD
40368: TF
Steve Simmons

Steve, I think Rob is correct -

TB and early TC - 40048 (clamp plate with micro-adjustment)
TC, and early TD and TD MkII - 40162 (clamp plate)
Later TD (from Oct 1952) - 40368 (cotter bolt)
Later TD MkII (from Oct 1952) and all TFs - 40367 (cotter bolt)

Hmmm... just looked up Bob's article and it has the same info I posted.

In 1989 I bought Engine #28838 to replace the Volvo B16B that came in Lazarus. The distributor that came with the engine is a 40368. I don't know the engine's source, just that I found that it had a cracked crank. Bud
Bud Krueger

That's #28839. Bud

Steve Simmons, the information from the mg.orgtabc/library has been incorrect for sometime.

All TFs originally had the 40367 Lucas Distributor, not the 40368.

Bud,

I know fairly well you own an MGTD. 40368 is correct for a late MGTD, not any TF.

My original distributor (TF2250) was a 40367.

That's been my assumption, Rod. I've been meaning to ask Tom Lange to identify the car that the engine was originally installed in. Unless someone swapped it, it would confirm the 40368 as being in a late TD engine. Bud
Bud Krueger

If one applies simple logic, the 40367 is earlier than 40368, in the same way that the TD was earlier than the TF.

Ergo, the correct distributor for the TF must be 40368.

Does anybody have a spare they can sell me? In North America, please. I'm afraid any shipping from far away, might be prohibitive.

Rob is correct, there was a typo in Bob's article. The two numbers were transposed. I've confirmed with Bob and corrected the article.

I wonder why no one ever pointed out the typo??? The article has been there for probably 20 years.

The 40368 and 40367 distributors had different Lucas advance curves -

40368 - Lucas ECM 279 curve finishing at 28 to 32 degrees advance at 5,200 revs.
40367 - Lucas ECM 364 curve finishing at 22 to 26 degrees advance at 4,400 revs.

Agreed! Also see section E of Bob's article for further info on plates, and section C for advance curves.
