MG TD TF 1500 - 5 Speed Prop Shaft is Too Long
Found out that the 5-speed prop shaft from High Gear is too long. Also found the reason is the rear has MGA gears and doing so the flange on the rear stands more proud causing the problem. Peter would replace the shaft but it'll take three weeks to have one made and more for shipping time, for 100 bucks I can have mine shortened by a drive shaft company close to me and have it back in 4 days! They do nothing but drive shafts as a business, pretty big outfit. PJ |

Its not too long for the standard axle set-up, which is what you would expect. Dave H |

Your right Dave, not peters fault. Had I known that there was a difference I certainly would have mentioned it to him. I told Peter what caused the problem, just so he could mention it to another customer avoiding this happening in the future. PJ

Just a thought--Would you be better off getting the pinion flange machined off by 1/4" if there's enough room/material to do that---and then leave the tailshaft as is-- |

William. That will not work. The MGA differential flange is 9.7mm thick. Regards Declan |

Maybe machine the other end of the flange where it butts up to the bearing--not sure what would happen with the spline/nut,the slinger would have to be removed/repositioned, but a recessed washer under the nut to fit over the spline would work ok if needed willy |

I appreciate all the suggestions, many thanks! I have decided the shaft goes to a driveshaft shop tomorrow and be shortened 3/8th inch. Back in 4 days! PJ |

All good PJ--I'm sure it'll be fine |

The shop cut and balanced my prop shaft in one day! Hard to believe but they called me this morning saying it's done. Because it was such a small job, they did mine first! In the car now and if it's nice a test run tomorrow! PJ |

Well, I took the car out for a test ride and I'm amazed at how well it performed! 5th gear is another driving experience, to say the least. Jumps up to 65 with no effort and is quiet as a church mouse. The engine doesn't labor running 65, but if not careful it'll jump right up to 70 also with no effort. Finally worth all the effort. Very happy with the results! Now let's keep the warm weather coming!! PJ |
