MG TD TF 1500 - 51 MG TD Air Cleaner

Greetings all,

How does one replace the filter element for the air cleaner? It appears to be constructed in such a way that I can't unscrew or remove the top.

Thanks,

Steve

This is what it looks like...to clarify, I can take the top half off, but the section that looks like it would have a filter element doesn't separate from the "lid".

SD Denham

You are missing ALL the wire mesh supposed to be in the top half, which does all the filtering. I would get stainless scrubbers, and fit as many as you can into the top.

You mean like steel wool or a brillo pad?

And don't forget after Tom's great suggestion, you fill it with oil to the oil line marked on the body.

This is what it should look like internally. See pic. Can someone clarify what is the correct size of the original AC air cleaner unit? I'd heard that there were two sizes, the smaller diameter being for the 1 1/4" carbies and the larger for the 1 1/2". Is this so? What are the correct diameters? Cheers

Wow, someone must have gone to town on it with a pair of pliers and pulled everything out for some reason!

Peter: Don't forget that somewhere in 1950 the air cleaner went from a smooth top with decal to the later embossed tops. I don't have the exact cut over number. :-(
Christopher Couper

No doubt it will be forthcoming Chris. All will be revealed 'in the fullness of time' - to steal a quote from a great 70's English TV show.. Cheers

Because I'm looking for those items and my car is 1950 it would be for interest to know the cut over number - any hints?

Thanks Tom for the brilliant suggestion, the steel scrubbers look like they will do a fantastic job!

SD Denham

Steve when you reassemble it make sure that there is a gap of about 1/2" around the lid to ensure the required airflow. Often the 6 tabs around the perimeter are bent flat. They can be gently opened up to achieve the correct gap. Cheers

The early assembly is a 3 piece affair
