MG TD TF 1500 - 53 half shaft replacement

Hi
I am new to this site and need some help.
I have just replaced the bearings and oil seals on the half shafts on the rear axle on my 53 TD. This all went straight forward with no problems, both shafts tapped out and then slid back in. The problem is now I don't have any drive to the rear drums from the prop shaft! I mean I can turn the prop shaft with one hand and hold the rear shafts at the drums still! I have looked in the workshop manual and searched the web but nowhere does it warn of alinment or disassembly precautions resulting in this problem.
Can anyone help me please? any help very much appreciated, thanks.

Unless you have three hands you can't hold them all ;-).
The diff is turning the one you are not holding.
Lock one drum and then try it.

Hi Ray
Yes your right, I locked one drum and the prop turned the other drum offering strong resistance.
Thanks for your help I've never done a car restoration before only a motorcycle so I wasn't sure on differential workings.
Thanks again much appreciated

Tim,
make sure you torque up the halfshaft nuts to 150 ft/lbs. If you don't you will wreck the drum splines and there are NO new ones available. That is if you have disc wheels, wire wheel drums are still made.

Thank you Ray, invaluable advise.

For a seat-of-the-pants answer, I tighten the hub nuts as tight as I possibly can with the wheels on the ground and a long breaker bar and pipe, and then tighten a bit more to get the castellated nut to line up with the cotter pin hole. NEVER loosen it to line it up! In all my years I have never damaged a nut or a shaft by trying to tighten it too much.
