MG TD TF 1500 - A smear or a dollop or lump....or nope?

G’day
When placing wire wheels back onto the splines do I smear a film of grease onto the splines or put a dollop on to fill the valleys or chuck a lump on and clean off the overflow.....or nope leave splines dry?

A smear of GP grease for me since 1980.

Whatever you use, just don't forget to clean it and all the accumulated road grime off every 2 years or 5,000miles (or 10k km), and apply clean grease.

Neglecting simple maintenance kills these cars.

Before I re-install wire wheels I use a small wire brush and solvent, and remove ALL the old spline grease and crud from both the wheel and the hub - and there is almost always a LOT! On the hub I then brush on a thin coating of copper-based anti-seize or heavy grease, and then use my fingers to wipe off all I can. Enough stays in the spline valleys to keep things well lubricated. I do NOT put anything on the rear taper of the hub or wheel, where they contact.

Tom Lange is 100% correct. May I add to be very careful applying the lube to the splines as worn splines can be very sharp! I always run my hand around the hub and not parallel with the splines.

You only need enough to lubricate. If you "fill the valleys" then it will get pushed out the back anyway. So a light smear is perfect. The rear taper is a friction surface so you don't want to gob it on, but you also want to prevent corrosion and fretting so wiping some oil on it from a cloth works, or apply grease and then wipe off again. Also put some grease on the inside lip of the spinner and/or the outer surface of the wheel hub that gets covered up by the spinner. Most people don't realize you need grease here, and it makes a huge difference.

Thanks for the replies.
Will do as advised.
