MG TD TF 1500 - A/V virus info : not MG related

I thought I would post this as it looks like we have had another spate of hack links posted to our board.
I just had to reinstall my entire OS due to an ERROR by AVG, the a/v software I was using. It trashed a Windows system sound and video library file and unfortunately, in trying to track down the problem, I uninstalled AVG. Once I had removed it, I could no longer reinstall the trashed .dll file and was forced to reinstall the entire OS (W 8.1)

A/V programs should know better than to trash essential program files!

I have switched to the built in Windows Defender AV suite and will use that from now on (with help from Malwarebytes etc).

I'm posting this so others don't make the same mistake. If you are having what you think is a virus related issue and getting system errors, make sure to search the web for all related info first. (I was getting an error message saying "xxx.dll file missing"). Had I done my research I would have discovered that this was a known AVG problem and I could have reinstalled the file from the virus vault. But I removed and deleted AVG first (because it was interfering with doing a system restore), and once I'd done that I had to start from scratch (which thankfully is not too difficult anymore).

Just a warning for anyone who might find themselves in the same boat...

It's very frustrating now as it seems like half the freeware programs on the web are now really just installers of Trojans, malware and other software you absolutely do not want on your system... I've given up running freeware programs...

Thanks. We sometimes forget and get lazy....

I ditched AVG years ago because the same thing happened!!! Before that Norton did the same thing when it forced me to buy an update!

Been using Defender a few years now. Has only found 1 virus in that time. And it's free from Microsoft so you are still "running freeware" but hopefully from a safer source?

I can rebuild an engine or set the preloaded in a rear axle but apart from finding the on/off switch I am clueless about my computer. I wish I was as IT literate as Geoffrey.

I use Iobit Advanced System care ultimate 8 at $19.00 per year. Takes care of viruses, malware, cleans the hard drive etc. With driver booster, all my drivers are kept up to date. There are other benefits imbedded in this software. Most of their software is free with options to upgrade to increase speed. Goggle it and check it out. PJ

As posted previously, its going to cost you a few bob however I have found Trend Micro Security to be infallible. Been down the Norton and AVG route previously and been burnt.

I use a $100 used laptop with Linux on it for all of my web searches and forum sessions. Linux is virus resistant and the laptop is isolated from my personal information. So far this has worked for me.

I have never had a virus on my home system, period. As an IT guy who's managed networks, I've always been overcautious, and over the past 20 years I've used pretty much every AV product on the market, including perimeter defense systems, hardware firewalls, and 'enterprise software', etc etc.
This time I got in trouble because a normally reliable and well-regarded AV program just screwed up. I don't recommend ANY program, I just recommend that you use whatever program you want to use regularly and religiously, and you should layer it with other programs as well. You should also NEVER click on a link if you aren't sure it's OK and you should ALWAYS enable your status bar on your browser so you can read the actual link address not just what is shown on the page, and verify that the link is going to take you exactly where it says it will take you. Never open a zip or any other kind of file to download it unless you absolutely trust the source, and that includes anything in email from your best friend, because email addresses are constantly hijacked as well.
As a rule, I don't listen to music files or video files or download images sent by friends, because ANY file can contain malicious software no matter how innocuous it may appear and no matter how trustworthy the source. And annoyingly, I have friends who love to send out cute pix of kittens and videos of their dog and all those really funny stories someone sent them... argggg...
These days, I use my smartphone for facebook or youtube or any application where I want to look at a file but don't trust it enough to open it on my computer.
