MG TD TF 1500 - AAAAAAH parts suppliers

So today I went to install the new fuel line I purchased from one of the suppliers. I started at the tank, made smooth bends, ran the line along the bottom inner edge of the frame clipping into the frame clips.

Going under the crossmembers and started the upward bend at the last clip in the frame so the pipe was close to the firewall.

Here is how it finished.

Yep, the new pipe is to short. Why is it so hard for the manufactures to get things like this right?

Well, I will go to the hardware store and buy new tubing. Unsolder the end connections and solder them on the the new tubing (once I make sure it is the correct length.

First picture is where the line ended. Next is the length from the factory.

Yeah. I buy my tubing at the local refrigeration shop. I bought a fifty foot coil because I had several MK ll fuel systems to do. And it was cheaper in bulk. I got the ferrules from FTFU.

I’m surprised your laying in lines now. Would have been much easier when the frame was bare but for the tub and fuel tank. But, I had to re do the lines late in the build on TD/c-8151 as well because I wasn’t happy with my bends at the pumps. After doing some research and getting factory photos and that of original cars line routings. I picked the style that was closest to my cars build timeline. I pre bent 3’ sections from the pumps to develop a pattern and then copied it onto the final lines. I used several different diameter cans and jars to roll the bends. It was much easier than using my tubing benders.

I also have several sets of original single pump fuel line here at the house if you want to clean it up and paint them. They should be chassis black.

After thinking about it, I think they sent me a TF pump to carb line. That would be shorter.

I am unsure on the black fuel line Bill. Factory pictures do not look like the line is black. Could be, but it is lighter than the frame.

The second picture appears to show the fuel line in most likely brass color from the frame up. This picture is clearly a media picture of a later TD, but I can't see why they would be different.

RE black fuel line. Bill's barn find TD (5177) and Chris Cooper's TD 23834 Picture 107, do show black fuel lines.

Chris has other "original" TD's on his site that show a brass line going up the firewall.

While the factory pictures are in black and white, the line going up to the pump does not appear to be black against the black.

So my guess is they painted the line on the frame up to the point where it goes up the firewall

I think the copper fuel line was black along the chassis until it left that clamp at the top of the A post, then it was natural.

Remember all sorts of stuff was painted black after assembly, either by a brush or even some sort of spray can.

I have several black fuel lines hanging in my shed that came out of cars having original paint all the way to the pumps. I don’t have an answer to definitively dispute your findings other than to say I have enough lines from what iare now 8 original cars Iv’e acquired and the majority have paint remnants from the tank to pumps. I have also seen factory photos showing painted lines connected at the pumps of a MK II in a factory brochure which is what brought it to my attention. It was a detail I failed to attend to during my restorations and wishing I had caught it in time. It may have been also been posted on the MGExp site in as thread re MK II fuel line routing when I was trying to determine what was correct for dads TD/c-8151 build date.

Here is one where you can clearly see the remnants of black paint on the line of an early car in the field.

But we all know that MG loved to paint everything that did not move black.
