MG TD TF 1500 - Abingdon

Hi all, I'm traveling on a cruise which will make a stop in Southhampton and would like to drive up to Abingdon to see Kimber house. Any recommendations or foresight from anyone? Suggestions? All appreciated. Thank you--Keith

Not much to see there anymore, but be sure to stop in at the club HQ (Kimber House). A visit to the old Magic Midget (now The Midget) and The Boundary House are worthwhile, as is the MG Museum in the old City Hall.

While you're there Keith can you take a pic of the M.G. Car Club sign & post it? It was repainted some years ago because the dots were missing from the new sign. It's a good thing Cecil didn't see it! Cheers

Brooklands is a similar distance from Southampton if you wanted to make a triangular tour.

Lots to see round and about; not far from Oxford, lots of good pubs and sights.

This is going to get me crucified, however if you want an insight into how wooden frame cars are constructed book a tour of the Morgan Factory whilst you are in the UK.

If you have the time, drive on up to Gaydon and visit the British Motor Industry Heritage Museum. They have most of the historic MGs including Old Number One, the EX record breakers, the cutaway. MGB GT and many prototypes. Its about an hour north of Oxford near Stratford Upon Avon. It is an amazing collection.

You have to copy and paste the urls in the places in the map - they lost their links when Google updated their maps engine and I haven't fixed it yet.

Think the links work in this version.

Its was my home town and I remember the MG Works well - some of my friends worked there, but there isn't much left that is MG related now. The old factory site is under a shopping precinct and the police station. The exhibition upstairs in the Old County Hall is very limited, when I last went there was one MGB there and some other memorabilia, but that is it, it simply does not do justice to the MG heritage. Kimber House OK, but the Boundary House (former residence) is just a pub. Its a very pleasant town, and has some interesting pubs and reasonable restaurants, but that is it. Perhaps worth passing through on the way to Gaydon as others have suggested.

Keith maybe you could get in touch with the M.G. Car Club in the area. As you say you're driving I guess you're hiring a car. You may be able to meet up with a local TD owner or two. I met a Yank with a TD from Grand Rapids through this forum & he & our wives spent a pleasant evening at my favourite Japanese restaurant when he was in Sydney. Cheers
