MG TD TF 1500 - Advertising help

I have decided to sell my ’53 TD. It’s a great car, but I don’t (for several reasons) don’t drive it as much as it deserves. (I also have an MGA.) What I am looking for is the best way to advertise it. I want to provide the prospective buyer as much information as I can about the car. I have about 60 pictures of the car, and I still haven’t put it on a lift to photo the underside. Has anyone used a site that would be appropriate for the TD that allows multitudes of pictures? I know there are “photo sharing” sites out there, but I just don’t want the buyer to be inundated with advertisements. I don’t mind paying for the listing.

I haven't sold anything there but eBay allows you to put a ton of pictures in your listing.

Maybe post a few pics here Frank. You never know.. You could also look into using the classifieds on Totally T Type 2. Cheers

If you use ebay plan on it costing you 25-30% of the selling price. Plus if there's any dispute between the buyer and you that you 2 can't settle, plan on it being settled by ebay or paypal in favor of the buyer. I've been thru that as a seller.
But you do get a wide advertising area.

Al, I had no idea it cost that much to sell a car on eBay. 30% is outrageous.

Al, I just looked at the eBay selling fees and it appears that if you are a low volume seller you only pay a set fee of $125. Where did you come up with the 25-30% figure? Here's eBay's info on fees:

Al, totally incorrect information. I recently sold my E-type Jaguar for $30k usd and the eBay fee was $125. There were a few other very minor charges for enhanced listing, "Buy it Now" ect. The total cost was less than $175.
The $125 fee is the same for all vehicles selling for more than $2000.00

Hugh, that makes a lot more sense. I wondered who would ever sell a car if the fee was 25 to 30%.

Maybe he was including PayPal fees?

Kevin McLemore

Kevin, he does mention PyPal fees but only in the case of a dispute. I doubt the eBay and PayPal fees would come anywhere close to 25% of the sales price.

Typically the deposit is paid into Paypal (who charge an outrageous 4%)for expediency. The balance is cash, certified check or, in my case, direct bank deposit when the car is picked up. Ebay even suggested the balance not go to Paypal.
All in all I found my transaction to very good.

Frank,
I'm a fan of BaT - bringatrailer.com

This web site list cars for sale from around the world (for sale on other sites) and also has an in-house auction format. Unlike e-bay, BaT is a true auction lasting a week with time extended if a bid comes in during the last 3 minutes. They list very interesting cars and have featured several MG's in the past. During the auction you get lots of feedback about your car from interested and knowledgeable buyers and bidders. The fees I believe are 5% of sale price and you can have a reserve in case bidding does not meet your expectations.

bringatrailer.com is part of my daily routine as the cars are interesting and unique. Check it out.

OK, I'll stand corrected--
My selling experiences on ebay only incl 1 sale in ebay motors, but many in the "standard" format, selling small-medium electronic stuff. In those sales, up to $2400, the fees, ebay and paypal, have added up in the neighborhood of 30%.
My one "motors" experience is the latest one, I listed a BMW Marine Diesel, needing work/parts, etc. first attempt with $99 for a start and reserve of $400 got bids to $260. Neither the high nor second bidder bought it when given a 2nd chance at their bid prices. Then I listed it with no reserve, and had one bid, at $99. He hasn't been heard from yet (after 5 days & 2 attempts), and if it does go thru my cost will be $60. After examination, I find that's a fixed fee, 60%+. I hope I never do sell it on ebay motors (don't think I can list it in the "normal" ebay, but may try again), I should have all fees removed if it doesn't go thru now.
I should have investigated the different fees for ebay Motors before I listed this item.
One potentially bad situation with PayPal has been resolved OK, but they told me their only goal is to make sure that neither party ends up with both the item and the money, no matter if there was any shadiness involved. If the buyer gets a refund, the seller pays all expenses, incl. shipping both ways.

Frank,
I misled you about the fees for BaT - bringatrailer.com
The 5% is a buyers commission. For the seller there is a flat fee of $250 and nothing else. If I were to sell a classic car, I would not hesitate to use BaT. Just my opinion.
