MG TD TF 1500 - Aftermarket Holley Carbs

I have a Wall o' Speed, on which I have all sorts of fun 50's speed equipment for the XPAG engine. I have a duplicate of the below-illustrated manifold and dual-carb setup popular in the 50's, but uncommon today. American mechanics were no doubt confused by the unfamiliar SU carbs, while these Holley carbs were thought to give more acceleration, and be easier to rebuild.

These two carbs are in good shape, but - as always - probably need a rebuild. Everything seems to be here, including linkage. Be the first on your block to have this rare accessory on your TD - when was the last time you saw a set of these on a car?

$350 plus shipping.

Sorely tempted, but I'm experimenting with a 32/36 at the moment. It's doing a fine job, not running too rich as they might on a small engine (I re-jetted to a smaller set). Still fine tuning to get the stutter out of the first 1" of gas peddle travel - a common problem on As and Bs I hear.

Now all it needs is a Douglas two port exhaust manifold

Pretty cool Tom. I have always been impressed by the amount of aftermarket items there were out there for the TD.

That Weber 32/36 takes me back. I had a 28/36 on my TF and it was splendid. I enjoyed being able to feel the point where the second choke came in. Mind you, that was when I had a Ford Cortina 1500 GT motor and gearbox in it.

The only problem with the Ford was that when you opened the bonnet you thought someone had stolen the engine. It lived way, way down there. The photo's not great, but it shows you the rocker box and the Weber above it.

I think it's interesting that there is an "MG" badge on it. Was this a licensed aftermarket part?

I'm betting it wasn't.

I'm kinda surprised it doesn't have a pair of 97s on it, quite popular back then. PJ

Where did you get the manifold for the Weber downdraft? That looks like an interesting setup.

Is there any data on how to jet it? I had one on my MGB and it ran very well.

Thanks,

Pierce Manifolds, on Amazon and ebay sporadically.

A pile of jets and all the parts required were included. I did have to shorten his supplied throttle shaft about 1". I haven't yet run a new choke cable... waiting to see if this is a long-term setup.

Data on jetting, not much for the smaller engines. "sides, compression ratio has a lot to do with the F/A radio, so a bit of fiddling will be required. I just haunted the MGB forums and asked a few questions to get close. I didn't get any direct answers. Reading spark plugs gets you there. It started a bit rich. I jetted the main/second, 130/135 and I'm *just* getting a grayish color on the plugs.

Thanks,$436 is a chunk of change, but a very reliable carby, I owned Fiats for a long time and that is what they used.

On the MGB I dumped the electric choke and went manual, it was in Hawaii so not a big need for choke really. It sure ran well though.
