MG TD TF 1500 - air cleaner mount stud size
Can someone give me the stud size that screws into the manifold and holds the oil bath on. Moss # 89 shows n/a |
DD Harshbarger |
I believe that it is 1/4 BSF, but am not absolutely sure of it. Try Abingdon Spares and/or From the Frame up. Cheers, |

I happen to have it off just now. Mine measure 5/16 by 1-3/4. Original? I think its correct. It fits the fork in the manifold casting with clearance. From the looks of mine, I made it out of SS. Jim B. |

"Mine measure 5/16 by 1-3/4." Now you're just bragging, Jim. ;) |

I'm thinking 6x1.0 metric. George |

Ok folks, DD Harshbarger asks "the stud size that screws into the manifold and holds the oil bath on". Jim and Kevin are thinking about the screw that holds the manifold to the carburetors. George is also thinking a fastener that goes into the engine or head is thinking of fasteners that go into the engine (Nuffields Mad Metric). The stud that holds the air cleaner to the elbow is in fact 1/4 BSF by a bit over 6 inches long - just measured the on our TD (does that give me bragging rights Kevin?). Cheers - Dave |

My bad. I should have looked at Moss #89. Jim B. |

Well, I hate to say it, but if you have a 1/4BSF stud it is not original. See attached pictures: one is a 1/4" BSF screw on top, the other a 6x1.0 metric oil pump bolt. The replacement wing nuts (which are too small- someone wanted to reproduce correct ones a few years ago but no one would pay the $25!), thread perfectly on both the my stud and oil pump bolt. George

Compared to oil pump bolt, threads are dirty but 6x1.0 nut screws on both perfectly.

Abingdon Spares has the correct ones - I complained at what they were selling (threaded rod...), sent them a model, and they had them done right. Tom Lange MGT Repair |

Thanks for all the input. Mine was seized up and I had to drill it out so now I will re tap the manifold for a new one. D. Harshbarger Sebring Fl. |

Tom - Want to check the thread on the ones you have and let us know if it is 6 X 1.0mm or 1/4 BSF. Cheers - Dave |

Maybe they used both sizes? |
George Butz |
George - "Maybe they used both sizes?" That is certainly a possibility. What I am going on is that the carburetor manifold is not manufactured by the same people as the engine and as such it is not held to Nuffields Mad Metric. Interestingly, the boss on the sump that has the anchor for the clutch return spring is threaded 1/4 BSF. I believe that items attached to the engine and that are manufactured separately used BSF threads. I also find that the 1/4 BSF and 6 X 1 mm are very close to the same size, both in the diameter and the thread. We have to leave shortly to visit the doctor, but when we get back I am going to check the dimensions and the threads (using a thread gauge) to see just how close they are. E-mail me at SUfuelpumps@donobi.net and we can pursue this further if you like. Cheers - Dave |

OK George - you are correct. While I have thread gauges for both BSF and metric, I could not get a good enough visual of the air cleaner stud to determine which it was. I finally tried the eared nut on a clean 1/4 BSF bolt and the nut would not go all the way on - so Nuffields Mad Metric it is. Cheers - Dave |
