MG TD TF 1500 - Airline Coupe

Got an extra $150,000 laying around collecting dust? You can get rid of it real quick if you have a mind to. It's for sale!

Oh I forgot, just in case.

Beautiful, what a great top!
It always amazes me to look at British in the late 30s and compare to the early 50s... stylistically and mechanically it was as if only a few months passed. Goes to show that the war really shut down technological innovation in every field except bomb building...

I doubt that many of you realise that we have on this forum, and a regular contributor at that, a serious Airline coupe owner. In addition to his TF, Lew Palmer owns PB 0560 Airline Coupé which he has been restoring for several years now. He is also running a register that tracks the very few MG Airline Coupés that were built.

They commanded a premium price and to a certain extent, defeated the goal of providing affordable motorsport and making them quite a rare breed. For this PA Airline Coupé to command $150,000 is not unusual.

If any of you were lucky enough to have visited the 2006 MG International in Gatlinburg, TN, you would have seen 5 of them together in one location - a rare sight.

Gord, I was there in 05 and saw the airline coupes on display. They were my favorite cars at the show. If I remember correctly, there was one there in the process of being restored. PJ

The one being restored was mine. The last one in the lineup.
The one currently for sale is the closest in the attached photo.

And this is how mine looks today.

Airline and Drophead Coupés, something truly special.

Gorgeous cars in the pics above, thanks!

Beautiful, Lew. Looks like that restoration is completed! Nice paint work in particular...

It's a beautiful car.

The airline cars of the thirties have to be some of the prettiest ever built.

I do have a problem with advertisers who sell cars and then try to dictate how the new owner should store or use the vehicle.

I'm afraid if you sell something you have no control over it's future. If the new owner spends $150,000 on it he/she is perfectly entitled to do what he/she wants with the car.

Nice!

Lew gave me a short ride in his a few years ago. Can't thank him enough for the privilage.
MG LaVerne

We need to do it again, LaVerne - not that I figured out that the clutch pedal stop was preventing a full disengagement of the clutch. Thus all the gear grinding you hear on your video.

I also nor have a pretty little PA roadster named "Smudge".
