MG TD TF 1500 - All European T Series must be negative earth
All new cars in Europe will have to have speed limiters fitted by 2022 and older cars retro fitted by two years later. Electronics will take info from GPS and read road signs to determine speed limits and then restrict cars to these. Knowing how difficult it is to find a positive earth version of something as simple as electronic ignition I wonder if the gizmos we will have to fit to our cars will be sold as negative earth only? Jan, could you direct us to the source of that information? Thanks. Tim |

Jan - don't suffer. That's a reason to leave the EU and not to leave UK ;-). I guess it's again a spook of some media or politicians. Never heard about that in Germany. But why shall a MG TD be a new car? It is historical and the most retrofits must not be done for historival cars. Retrofitting to newer cars will be complicated because there are no servos for limitting speed. There are hundreds of different solutions for the throttle. |

There is an article in yesterdays New York Times regarding this very subject. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/27/world/europe/eu-cars-speeding-technology.html Jim |

From the article: "The rules would apply to all new models starting in May 2022, and existing models on sale starting in May 2024. They will not require retrofitting cars sold before 2022. Britain’s Department for Transport said it would follow the rules despite the country’s planned withdrawal from the European Union."
So, "They will not require retrofitting cars sold before 2022." Does that mean that if I keep my '53 TD I'll not have to retrofit it but if I sell it after 2022 I (or maybe the new owner?) will have to retro fit it. I've always loved the way reporters can fill up a page with words but leave more questions than answers. Anyway, I don't plan on selling my TD until I'm dead or too old to know what's going on. Given the US infatuation with autonomous cars (golly, my computer and the computers on the Max 8s have never crashed or had a fault), I suspect that we will follow the EU lead in the near future. The way to learn to drive safely and defensively is to be required to learn to drive in a TD where the car will do nothing for you and nothing to protect you. End of rant. Jud |

Jud your questions may show that the EU is in the hand of the car builders. If sold cars must be retrofitted and it is expensive the car manufacturers will sell more new cars. The old cars which had been produced with many resources in the past will then be shredded. |

My Garman knows the speed limit for every road I travel on, down to 25 MPH residential streets up to freeways. I see the next step is for the car to harvest the speed limit info from the satellite and impose limits for all roads and streets. |
