MG TD TF 1500 - Alternative TF 1500 Gearbox rear seal
I need to replace my gearbox rear seal and differential pinion seal. The gearbox seals I see advertised are felt. I have heard that the rubber rear seal on a MGA will fit? Any suggestions for what to use for the pinion seal, not sure what the ones Moss sells are made of. thanks |

The dark gray felt rear seal from Moss works fine in my TF gearbox. The gearbox is completely dry at the flange. It's been in for about 1,500 miles. I bought a couple of white felt rear seals from Aningdon Spares about a year and half ago. They were too big and did not seal. I believe that Martin Cook was looking to correct the problem. Can't give advice about diff. Lonnie TF7211 |

My Moss seal was white felt. It took some fiddling but it all got stuffed in the tailhousing. No leaks thus far Bill Chasser TD-4834 |

I made my own gearbox seal and it works. Regards Declan ![]() |

The original felt "seal" doesn't do much. There is a spiral machined into the flange that screws the oil back in- I cant recall if it is deep enough for the felt to run on. If there is a lot of leakage, it is likely from the speedo pinion (see archives for fix), or the oil is overfilled. Also, parking on a steep uphill could make it leak if overfilled. If just a little leak, no way I would pull the box to change it. George PS- Diff seal standard modern type seal, that is easy to do. |
