MG TD TF 1500 - Andrex Parts Needed

I am trying to put together a set of Andrex shocks for a guy with a Mark II TD that has nothing, and I need some parts. I am interested in anything, in any condition - bodies, links, arms, etc.

Thanks very much.

Apple hydraulics says they have them. http://www.applehydraulics.com/spec04.htm

Tom, I could be wrong but I think they only restore the Andrex shocks, they don't seem to show parts for them. PJ

You could try Graham or Michael Brown at Vintage & Classic Shock Absorbers in the UK. They don't specifically do Andrex as their main business, but I'll bet they know where to get the bits.

PJ, don't know about parts but they sell the complete shocks. This is from Apple Hydraulics site:

"Complete set of original MGTD Andrex shock absorbers and links, rebuilt and ready for installation.

Call for price"

I shudder to think what the price is.

A few words of caution...Don’t send Andrex shocks to Apple. A well known friend sent a set in and they were destroyed in short order after they seized. Apple used incompatible materials ( some sort of plastic instead of the proper wood species discs). The plastic ground itself up in short order damaging the the original pieces.

Also note the the NORS Moss wood discs that float around on eBay occasionally are also not correct. Wrong wood material and thickness.

As there are no original materials or parts available for these shocks and most people haven’t a clue how to set them up properly causing spline damage it is usually best to gut the shocks and present them on the car as display pieces only.

A front sway bar will give better cornering performance for much less money. But those needing to restore their TD, TD MKII, TF and MGAs equipped with these rare pieces have few true options to make them functional.

Tom, I have several intact full sets as spares including all chassis mounting brackets that I have accumulated over the years. I was originally going to upgrade TD-4834 with them but did the sway bar set up instead as I had already completed the restoration. Have your customer contact me directly if he still needs a set. I will only sell them to bonifide and verified MK II owners. They won’t be cheap.

Tom,

Paul Beck (now under new ownership) stock many parts for André Hartford shocks that are compatible with Andrex.

Thanks, Gord; I have looked at his site before, and found that the only thing he carried of possible interest to the later Andrex shocks are the wooden discs. Everything else relates to the two-arm Andre Hartford shocks, as found on earlier vintage cars.

He does not appear to offer shafts, seals, rubber bushes to fit, or the steel friction plates, all of which are needed to properly rebuild an Andrex.

I don't think many post-war cars used these shocks (doees anyone know another?)

About 4 years ago, Peter Caldwell of World Wide Auto Parts (NOSImports.com) told me he could rebuild my Andrex shocks (which I have put off), and added that the price would reflect the condition. He said there are often extenuating problems and they may need some custom machine work.
