MG TD TF 1500 - Annoying 'Klunk'

Probably not the proper technical term but whenever I hit the slightest bump there is a klunking sound coming from under the car to the rear. I have crawled around underneath shaking everything I can get my hand on and all seems tight. I did find a missing bushing in one of the shock arms which I replaced. There was also a missing exhaust hanger at the transmission bracket which I fabricated a replacement for. I'm thinking I should rebush the rear springs. Any other ideas? Thanks.

If the exhaust is too close to the rear bumper it can cause this issue. I believe the stock rear bushings are a necessity.

Bob, I had a similar thing show up awhile ago. It turns out that it was the rear brake line contacting the front of the side curtain compartment. There is a 'T' connector on the flange of the differential where the line goes across to feed the right rear brakes. There is not much clearance in normal conditions. Just an idea. Bud

Bob,
Take a wrench and try to tighten ALL of the shock bolts. Even though you shook enerything, those bolts have to be tight. Manually shaking every thing isn't quite the same as the impactof road bumps.

Hope this helps,

I had the same issue that Steve mentions. took a year to figure it out.One of the bolts holding the rear shock body to the frame was loose.
Now if I could just stop the differential axle from hitting the exhaust on full extension over big bumps without buying new retaining straps, that would be nice !

Any recent work done to the car? I created that mess when my seatbelt bolts were too long and contacted the driveshaft when bumps were driven over. How does the transmission rear mount look? Are the rear axle U-bolts tight?

I don't know how I can ever thank you guys enough for all the help and advice you have given me over these past several years. You have saved me a great deal of time, money and frustration. In this case Steve called it right. I found a loose shock mounting bolt on the right rear. I tightened it up and the "klunk" was gone.
I was just about to order all new spring and shackle bushings since I thought was the problem. Thanks again, you guys are great!
