MG TD TF 1500 - Another factory part change
Have not seen this one in print or here on the web. So let me know if this is a known change.
My tool box lid was chromed some time in the past. I am restoring my car back to original, so I traded the lid for a painted one. There is a difference in the hinges of the two lids. Mine (from TD 4139 Nov 1 1950) has tabs the hit the bottom of the lid and keep it from folding down. The one I received has just plane hinges. and folds in both directions (TD 8986 July 11 1951). Can others check to see what their car has? See if we can see if this was just a different manufacturer or a production change. Here is my lid with the tabs marked ![]() |

Here is the underside hinge on the lid from 8986

This from my car built on 1 Feb 1951. It shows the same hinges as your original. Cheers Peter TD 5801 ![]() |

TD3042 has the same tabbed hinge as in Peter's photo. Black underside, as well. |

10835 plain hinges with no tabs |

So it looks like there was a part change between February 1. (TD5801) and July 11 (TD 8986) |

All of them were black underside. Somewhere out there is a ghost image of the toolbox lid in your original body color. You can generally see this with the TF's in the side curtain boot. |

The TD I had did not have the tabs early 52 car. My TF lid does have the tabs....but I was pretty certain it wasn't the original lid as it did not have any holes in it for the body plate. I'll have to look at this early 50 that's here |

Any other information on cars between TD 5801 and TD 8986?. Should be able to feel or see the tool box tabs with one of the lids lifted up. |
