MG TD TF 1500 - Another manufacturing interesting item

I am repainting my valve cover and noted that at the factory when the cover is pressed, there is a indentation for the oil access on both ends of the cover.

Is this another of those "Used on various MG engins? or just easier to indent both sides so the cover does not have to be aligned in one direction for the machine that adds the oil access ring.

I also noted that the two side bolts are braised on, but the oil filter vent is silver soldered on.

Thoughts?

Here is the vent.

I went to get Argent Silver paint and my paint shop could not mix it in a spray can (we are restricted to VOC reduced paint for spray cans). I ended up with another ford silver, but I think it may have too much green/blue color.

The other item. Was the original just a regular silver paint or metallic?

Impressions?

Argent Silver is a GM color used on Mid 60s to late ‘80s Rally wheels. What comes very close is 1962 Chevrolet 409 valve cover paint which is a metallic silver with a slight greenish cast to it. It is available from the Chevy specialty restoration venders. Both paints are available in rattle cans from these suppliers. I will probably powder coat mine with the same color I used for my rims on dads car.

The next issue of TTORC has a piece on the restoration of the rocker cover. Due out mid August if you can hold off for that long. Cheers

Bill,
What powder coat color did you use on your wheels? I am looking at Prismatic colors and, well, there are a lot of them. I am comparing colors to a can of Moss spray paint and trying to match, since that is the only reference I have.
Thanks,
Jim

I don't know about the GM version but when I was looking for color for some TC wheels a few years back I was pointed to Fords Argent Silver as used on Ford Granada wheels in the late 70's and early 80's and that is what I used on the TD 1250 valve cover. It's available off the shelf around here Bruce. I do not know how they handle that where you are. I see it's available on line but again I'm not sure if it can be shipped to you or not.

I believe that the slight greenish tint is not the look valve cover paint had when new, but is part of a color-shift process over time, with clear-coat and with heat cycles. The Argent Silver is a color very close to original for both wheels and rocker cover - I once had an NOS valve cover in a sealed MOWOG box, and Argent Silver matched it very closely.

If you remove the "Valve Clearances" plate you will find the only valve cover undisturbed paint - plain silver without a hint of green.

I agree with Tom. I painted my valve cover silver, and I thought it was too bright. I left it to do other things, and now after many heat cycles and oil, dirt etc. from driving it is now that sought after greenish tint.

The true colour can be found under the oval brass tag on the side of the rocker cover, providing that it's never been removed. Not too many have though. The result will be a surprise to many of you. Cheers

JV. The powders used in my wheels are: GR 06 silver metallic and CL 01 clear

Thanks All. I will see if I can get the Argent Silver. I like the looks of LaVern's it is more silver than the one I used.

I actually had a pretty close silver that I used on the wheels and valve cover during the original restoration., and still have a quart of it, but it is in Wisconsin, and at least 38 years old.
