MG TD TF 1500 - Another of those Hmmmm items

I noted that the left lower inner corner of the toeboard has a small piece of the metal cut out. I was not sure this was factory, but Bill Chaser says this is the way they came. It looks like this was done by hand as the edge is not smooth.

Not sure Bruce, but I think that is there to clear the pedal box on LH drive cars

Toe board in my LHD TF7211. Same cut out including the angled cut at the gearbox cover. I just now sat it on the chassis. William Revit is right ... Perfect opening for the LHD pedal box.

(Yes, "D" nut is missing from bottom right corner.)

Lonnie. FTFTU has the D nuts for the toeboard. I recently had to add them to a toeboard I used on dads car.

So do the RHD cars have a corresponding hack job too?

I always assumed that there had been a thin strip between the opening for the pedal box and the gearbox cover, and that it had been accidentally broken off by a previous when the gearbox was removed(?)

I debated replacing the “D” nut or to continue using a nut and bolt. Couldn’t find an easy way to squidge it into place. Didn’t want to weld. So, it’s a nut and bolt for TF7211.

It only required a couple of light blows with a drift to secure the D nut bit that was out of the car and on the workbench

Lonnie, That cut is near exact to mine. That would indicate it may have come that way from the maker and not modified on the floor.

It will be interesting to hear if the RHD TD's have this on the other side.

I looked closer at the toe board and pedal box in my TF. It looks like the toe board originally had a tab on the right side of the top of the pedal box. A flat head machine screw probably connected the tab to the pedal box. Welded nut in the pedal box is in the perfect position for the tab.

You can see where the tab started at the upper right corner of the cut out in the photos in my earlier posts. The tab and screw would give more rigidity to the toe board.

My guess remains that the narrow tab was accidently broken off sometime in the car's life.

The rubber pad goes between the box and the toe board. (Is the reproduction pad punched for a screw? Mine is stored in a box for reassembly)

24,600 LHD TDs were built (83% of total production)
6,800 LHD TFs were built (70% of total production)

I don't think that the company who produced the toe boards or the MG plant at Abingdon would have manually clipped the tab from 31,400 toe boards. It would have been better to remake the die that cut the toe boards. The ragged edge suggests that it was not cut by a die.

is it possible it was cut away to give better spanner access to the pinch bolt? not necessary on RHD cars as the pedal assembly is different.
I am converting a TD/C LH to RH and I don't know how you cope with that layout. The assembly time of putting the pedals on the shaft on RHD cars is minutes and no swearing.
