MG TD TF 1500 - Anybody Wrapped Their MG Yet?

I had my Tesla done in this stuff and it looks pretty good. It is not as nice and smooth as my lacquer paint on the MGTD but maybe it would be nice on the grill slats, front of the front fenders and the bottom front of the rear fenders. If you only do a partial fender you will end up with a noticeable line though, so maybe both sets of fenders would really need to be wrapped.

Like you I have only done it to my more modern cars. I have had it on three of the cars for almost 9 and 11 years. It has held up great and does a good job of preventing sand blasting from the roads. I use a Novus glass cleaning spray on them about twice a year and just soap and a rag when they get washed normally. On two of the cars I also run a modern bra on top of it. No issues with the two.

I had a acquaintence who had his new Ferrari professionally wrapped in it. Looks great but did cost a lot of money to do it. Funny as I wrote that last sentence I realized it was not that expensive if you had the cash to buy the car. The car's finish was made flawless before the wrap and then it was wrapped. The car had a total of 8 miles on it when it was done.

Honestly never thought of putting it on the older cars. After watching it be put on I doubt I had the ability. First they had a laser type cutter/printed that they entered the year, make and model and all the pieces came out ready to be installed and if they screwed up a piece they just ran that piece. There was very little waste and the installer was a pro.

Yes I do have a line across the hood. That line is more noticeable on dark colors then light ones. On a tan or white I do not think you would even see it. Guess it is the price you pay for the protection.

I haven't done it yet, but the appointment is set. A good friend owns a customizing shop that does all kinds of things to high end, new cars including wrapping them. I won't be using clear, but rather wrapping the the front and rear finders and running boards in a different color. My car is silver so we will use be using a darker graphite gray for a two tone look..

If I don't like it or in a few years want to go back to all siver, hit with a heat gun and peal it off...

I'll post before and after pictures once it's done.

John,
How do they wrap it around the rolled fender edges???

Hi Steve,

To be honest, I really don't know. I'm assuming they heat the material and message it in. I should have mentioned that the wrap is being done on a TF. I'm going to be especially interested how they wrap all the compound curves around the headlights.

I'll do my best to take pictures of that process.

On my Tesla they wrapped much of it over the edges and it sticks fine. On some cars I have seen they wrap right up to the edge. If you run your finger across the panel from the edge you can feel the lip of the wrap but it's almost impossible to see. On the corners they cannot wrap it under otherwise it would have a fold so they always seem to cut a slot in the corner where it does not wrap over the edge.

Just got back from my appointment and we have decided not to color wrap the fenders and running boards. While it can be done easily on the rear fenders and running boards, the compound curves around the TF's headlights would require a couple of seams.

Cost would be around $1,200 and we decided that for a couple of hundred dollars more, painting made more since. Money's not the issue, the seams are. They know how picky I am and when you consider it's not just a simple heat and peel to remove it (sticks so well, it could take paint with it) we'll paint in the fall.

Anyway, it looks like a TD would pose no seam issues and would be a doable project.

I wouldn't put it on my TF. The paint on my car is not only expensive, $900.00 per gallon, it's also immaculate in shine and general appearance and is clear coated. I don't mind taking care of it. I use no abrasive waxes of any kind, it would be scary to me to put something else on it. PJ
