MG TD TF 1500 - Are these off a TD?
Can anyone confirm? Cheers Peter TD 5801 ![]() |

Peter, they're certainly the same as a TF which I think may be the same as the TD. Don |
Donald J Walker |
Thanks Don. I took a punt and bought them anyway thanks to the help of one of the Californian stalwarts on this forum. I plan to either use them as is, as they have riveted linings which may well be original, with plenty of meat on them and are apparently much better that those that are currently available, or have them relined and kept as spares.
Is it possible to still get NOS riveted linings? I know they are made from asbestos and shouldn't be used, but there must be stock out there in private hands that could be put to good use. My go to mechanic who has a Y Type here in Sydney, doesn't have nice things to say about the currently available modern linings, stating they're not a patch on the original stuff and that Kevlar isn't an option for normal road use. He also agrees with Tom who believes drums shouldn't be used if they're 60 thou or more over. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

New riveted linings are available and don't contain asbestos. If I remember correctly, NTG sell them, but you may be able to find some closer to home. Dave H |

They might be OK in the UK Dave but apparently they're pretty ordinary here. I'd love to get some of the NOS linings, though I suspect it may now be illegal to sell them because of the asbestos. Cheers Peter |

Back in the 1970s I was a Tech guy for an outfit called Turner & Newall, who had been big in asbestos. One of the subsidiaries was Ferodo - specialist in brake pads, etc., and even then they were busy in getting rid of asbestos. I imagine it would have to be original or very old stock to contain it now Dave H |

Peter, Here are NOS brake linings from Ferodo. If you want I can get them for you and post them to Oz. The inner German postage is free. https://www.ebay.de/itm/MG-TD-Bristol-401-Bremsbelage-Bremsbelag-Satz-B-Leyland-Ferodo-MR19-MC-27-3/312117687551?hash=item48aba9f4ff:g:SlwAAOSwcUBYPtfC Regards Declan |

There is a reason that asbestos has been outlawed-the tiniest amount in your lungs, or those of the next owner of your car or mechanic who works on it can have very bad consequences. |

You're right of course JK. I've been a construction site manager for most of the past 20 years and have supervised the removal of a good deal of the stuff. It can be safely handled though as long as adequate precautions are taken. I'll email you off thread Declan. Cheers Peter TD 5901 |

Ferodo MR19 was the original brake lining material according to Chris Couper's website. Dave H |

Here is a link to brake materials: Ferodo gets a mention. https://www.motorsportmagazine.com/archive/article/march-1957/20/brakes-and-brake-lining Peter |

Great read Peter. It seems we owe a debt to Mr Herbert Frood. If it wasn't for him we wouldn't be going anywhere in a hurry. But then again maybe not, as he did introduce asbestos into the brakes on those London carts.. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Looks like the linings are heading for Oz! Regards Declan |

Thanks Declan. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Interesting that TDs used Ferodo MR19 linings and then they switched to Ferodo DM7 for the TF. That may explain why they stenciled DM7 on the back plate of the TF, so mechanics would know the recommended material when doing a brake job..... I know my TF and Frank's had this stencil- I wonder if it was only used on the relatively early TF's so those TD parts would not accidentally be used? ![]() |

The article above lists the following. MR19. Solid woven non-metallic. Less fade resistance than MR41. More suitable for medium-sized cars. DM7. Moulded. High friction value. Suitable for light to medium cars. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Shipping costs for the 4 shoes from the States is a real killer. UPS want $200 US and the USPS about $80! Anyone know of a cheaper method to get them here? I might have to end up having them sent by surface mail. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |
