MG TD TF 1500 - asbestos brake pads
I'd found a parcel with asbestos brake pads and rivets in an unopend sheet. Here in Europe they are banned. Are such brake pads still an option for other countries? |

Not in the USA. Bud |

If you do not want them, I will take them off your hands. Modern compounds do not have the stopping power of this material. Even to dispose of them you will need a licenced company. I think it is only illegal to manufacture them. Many classic cars here still have asbestos shoes fitted Never blow the dust away, use a vacuum. Ray TF 2884. |

Safer to use a damp cloth or kitchen towel and seal it in a plastic bag when done. Dave H |

Yes it has been mentioned in the net that this kind of pads are more powerful then pads without asbestos. I do not want to use it. Today I've ordered new stuff. |

Using an ordinary vacuum is just as bad as blowing asbestos dust away. The dangerous particles are microscopic and will pass right through ordinary filters. Dave H has it right, but it's better still not to use the asbestos in the first place. Joe |

I would keep them as a display item. The stuff is harmless when sitting idle. Rgds Mike |

Spray bottle with water to keep dust from flying when working around or replacing pads. Newspaper on ground, paper napkins. Best to always assume any brake dust may be asbestos. Modern materials not so much better, as they tend to be artificial or asbestos-like material. Not the same, but similar hazards. |

As a retired surgeon,I urge you to keep away from asbestos. Don't use these pads please. Asbestos particles represent a lifethreatning hazard. If you inhale them, even in small quantity, they will stay in your lungs and seriously increase the risk of developing cancer. Let us enjoy life and our cars as long as possible! |

The original shoes from my car has very little wear on them, they actually look great. I wasn't going to change them, but because everything else was new I put new bonded shoes on but kept the old ones as they have the holes for rivets. PJ |
