MG TD TF 1500 - Backfire again
I had this exact problem on my spring start-up. Start up is late this year due to transmission change. When the engine is started, it starts easy and idles but during rev up it begins backfire. If i sneak up on the RPM's to about 3,000 RPM's it almost runs smooth but giving it more fuel, backfires. Release the throttle, it runs smooth at about 1,000 RPM's. Checked under the distributor cap hoping for moisture. No moisture. All plugs are hot so they've been firing. Distributor is still point system. When I shut it down last fall, it was running great. I put Staybil for ethanol in the fuel. Like I said, this event happened last spring and eventually worked itself out. Looking for clues.

Sounds to me like it is running lean. Gary |

Hi Gary, I pulled en-riching knob and that did not help. Actually got a little worse. By the way, it back fires through the exhaust. Thanks, Bill TD24570 |

After firing seems like more of a stuck valve..timing..or rich condition situation Regards, tom |

If it's popping through the exhaust the carbs are fat and the In burnt fuel going into the exhaust is finding a fresh air source somewhere in the pipes or through burnt gaskets |

Dead fuel-------it ain't what it used to be You'll either have to drain it or fill it right up with fresh stuff depending how much is in the tank If it's below say 1/4 just fill her right up with fresh stuff If it's more than about a 1/4 I'd be draining it out willy- |
