MG TD TF 1500 - ball valve

I have a 1/4 inch NPT brass ball valve that I would like to use as a drain valve on the fuel tank. Does anyone know if it will be okay with todays fuels? If not, what have other folks used? Thanks, Tom

It may be 100% metal or it may have a teflon seal on one side of the ball- good seal,no corrosion, low friction and insoluble to most chemicals.

To be sure, you can disassemble it or slip a plug in the open end for insurance against a drip or inadvertant twist of the handle.

I am using one I gotfrom the Netherlands, no leaks.

But, I don’t use ethaniol fuel either.

Jim is spot on. I tested the ones that I use for 6 months in a jar of petrol. There was no problem. You will need a 1/4" NPT to 3/8" BSPP adapter to fit that valve to your tank. Better to use a three way ball valve.

That should have read 1/4" NPT to 1/4" BSPP adapter.
Here's a drawing showing what I mean.

Here is a different way of thinking about installing such a valve. On my TF the SU pump is on the firewall and in the right rear wheel well, where later model TFs have the SU pump, I have a Facet pump as a back up. When I installed the facet pump I also installed a ball valve between it and the fuel tank. I had not thought about using it to drain the tank but rather to use it as a shut off when I needed to work on fuel system downline of the tank. It saves me from draining the tank for such work. Between the valve and the Facet pump I use a flexible fuel line rather than copper. If I ever needed to drain the tank it would not be difficult to shut off the fuel, disconnect the flex line from the Facet and then drain the fuel into an appropriate container. The valve I installed is just a basic shut off valve from Lowes or Home Depot. It have been on the car for many years with never a problem.
