MG TD TF 1500 - Bent kingpin
I have a car coming in tomorrow with what the owner describes as a bent kingpin after an accident. I am going to replace both kingpin and spindle as a unit from my parts bin, but all of a sudden I can't remember how one would remove the kingpin from the spindle. Is it just a press fit? Is it perhaps held in by the steering arm? Sorry to have a senior moment. Tom Lange MGT Repair |

Tom, If I remember correctly king pin and spindle are a single unit, they don't separate. PJ![]() |

It is held in with a tapered bolt.MOSS 261-097 I assume you are working on a TC. TD does not have a king pin. TD has a swivel pin. Gary |

Yup, I just checked again, sorry my bad, but I think you'll need to press the spindle out. I'd just replace the whole unit, less work. PJ |

I just had this done. Yes, they are held in place by the steering arms (and more than one person has reversed the arms during installation). Many pins take a lot of heat as well as pressure. Also, we purchased several new pins from Moss and one did not fit (too small diameter). Have been told this is not uncommon. |

I don't remember it being particularly difficult. I did take this one over to my brother in laws for the installation of the new bushings and pins as he has all the needed reamers that I do not.

Hi Guys We do not know if it is a TC or TD. Two totally different assemblies. Done by totally different process. Gary |

TD/TF- remove nut and press tapered steering arm out, then tap/press the king or swivel pin out of the spindle. There is a shoulder so it will only go one direction. TC- tapered bolt as mentioned above, etc. George |

Sorry - I should have said TD. George and all - thanks for the information. Tom Lange MGT Repair |

I've done this job, not to bad. Easily pressed out and new one pressed in after removing the steering arm. I would magnaflux the spindle. It takes a lot of force to bend a kingpin. Be well, David |

I wonder how much?

Just a reminder to remove the bushings out of the upper and lower links before removing them Otherwise the threads get flattened. Don't ask me how I know this. Mike |
