MG TD TF 1500 - Best paint for under fenders.

I want to paint the underside of my fenders with a hard surface paint that will resist chipping from stones, etc. I'd also like a paint that can be top coated with the final color. My car will be black so chips of the top coat under the fenders will not show very easily if the undercoat is black as well.

thanks

IF you are starting form bear metal Tim

I believe you would do well with Por15.
It comes in black and you use a rust inhibitor process to apply it. Metal prep. It is also as hard as nails when dry and said to not chip. Holden’s in England have a video where they hammer on a painted piece and it dents but does not chip or flake off.
Quite impressive.

I used modern stone chip paint under a coat of gloss.

Herculiner is the stuff often used for the back of pick up trucks - seems to be rock solid.

Tim,
I have used Stone Guard on my MGA, MGB and recently on my TD. It can be oversprayed with which ever paint you choose to use as your final colour.
It is an excellent product and one which a panel beater friend has used for many years.
Hope this helps.

John, is Stone Guard the product name? I can't seem to find it via Google. Perhaps it's an Australian only product.

Tim,

Some manufacturers of Stone Guard are Rust-Oleum, Wurth, Septone and 3M. However I will call and see my panel beating friend today (after I come back from taking our dog to the Vet)and let you know.

Thanks John. Hope your dog is OK.

Another suggestion is 3M rocker schutz. You can tint it or paint over it.

Hi Tim,
I went over this afternoon to my panel beater friends business and they use Gravi-Tex Stone chip Protector. This product is made in UK by Upol Ltd. Their US site is
www.u-pol.com and they also can be contacted in Euston PA on (800)340 7824 or (610)746 7081.

Forgot to say that Auto Body Toolmart is just one of U-Pol's agents.

Tim...check with any of the auto paint stores (including O'Reilly's). They'll have what you're looking for.

Thank you everyone for the helpful information. I've decided to go with POR 15 based on the video. Remarkable stuff.

NAPA Stone Guard spray over epoxy primer followed by your base coat! 6 years now no chips or "stars" in paint. Available at any Napa I'm sure.

How will por15 (which is a great chassis paint) protect against "stars" on the topside paint? Regards, tom

Tom, I think because the POR is so hard it will limit deflection of the metal it is adhered to due to impacts. The video shows the toughness of the POR. But even if a deformation occurs the POR will not chip off the underside of the fender.
