MG TD TF 1500 - Billet Crank

I am researching the availability of a good billet crank for my XPAG/TD/LHX1606 engine.
I am having trouble finding one that is available now or within a couple of weeks.

So far:
Moss end of March maybe.
Moldex 10-12 weeks
British Parts NW N/A
LBCar Co N/A
Abingdon Spares is researching.

Any info would be appreciated.
TIA

I bought mine about a year ago from Brown and Gammons in the UK. Delivered to Quebec in about 10 days, shipping cost about $200. They had nine in stock at that time and said they usually had them in stock. Made by Phoenix in the UK. Price about the same as other N.A. suppliers (including Moss) who didn't have any in stock and couldn't say when they would have. I suspect the vintage racing enthusiasm in the UK makes for a steady demand.
Good luck.

"Speaking of parts, I have a new product to announce. I am now able to sell UK made steel billet crankshafts made to the original factory specification. They are balanced and nitrided, sold ready to fit at £1,550 including VAT."

"....fit at £1,550 including VAT."

Holy cow, that's $2,200.00 US, plus shipping. That alone is 10% of the value of many TDs out there. For much less than that, you can buy a decent 1800 and get a LOT of work done to it.

I hope my crank never needs replacing.

That is less expensive than a Moldex,,,
When you do in fact have to get a FULL rebuild, are you going to trust your old crank still spinning at 4,000 inside???

Mort,

Seems like a good time to re-evaluate. When I was driving our TD as a teenager (like, 45 years ago!), I remember being dismayed at how slow the car was. When we started our rebuild, I approached Manley Ford about how to improve the performance. I took his advice and the car really moves. His recommendations included: Billet crank with MGB big-end journals, Saenz rods, lightweight flywheel with a Cortina/Lotus clutch, header and 5-speed. You might have to refinance your house, but the result is a really great car.

Brown and Gammons says "Low Stock"

but the price is:
£1,554.00

£1,295.00 ex. VAT ($1859.49)

Good advice on the billet crank with MGB big ends. Thats what i run in the racecar. Can turn 7200 rpm all day without worry. Broke a stock crank at Watkins Glen and replaced with billet.

My TF 1500 had a typical XPAG/XPEG crankshaft crack between the front main bearing journal and the #1 conrod journal, revealed by magnaflux after engine strip. Visually the crank journals appeared almost like new.
I spent about a week or so reading a multitude of archive stories about cracked/broken cranks, researching the history of engineering material changes(I'm a metallurgical engineer!), and looking for a possible replacement or repair.
Considering the scarcity of the 1500 block and head, I couldn't see replacing the crank with another used part(assuming one could be found) and went with the costly Phoenix-made part from B&G. Maybe with the greater availability of XPAG blocks and heads it would be worth taking a chance with a used crank: there are lots of stories of cranks failing and doing little engine damage.
Good luck.
